Right, last updated 16 August 2026, and this one has been sitting in the diary for a week now. New York RB host Chicago Fire on Sunday 22 August, kicking off at half past midnight UK time for those of you mad enough to stay up. Yes, it is MLS. Yes, I am fully invested. And yes, before Connor says anything, I have actually looked at the numbers on this one.
The Situation in the Eastern Conference
Look at the table and you get the picture pretty quickly. New York RB are 8th in the Eastern Conference with 25 points from 19 games. Seven wins, four draws, eight losses. Goal difference of minus 11. That is not a team flying, mate. They have shipped 41 goals this season which is genuinely alarming for a team with play-off ambitions. Chicago Fire on the other hand are sitting 4th in the East on 29 points from 17 games. Nine wins, two draws, six losses. They are actually in decent nick considering the table does not always tell you the full story with MLS.
Look at the fixtures though and you can see why this matters. Chicago are chasing a top four spot and every point counts. New York need a result at home to keep their slim play-off hopes alive. Stakes are real. This is not a nothing game.
New York RB: Leaking Goals at an Alarming Rate
Honestly, where do you start with New York's defensive record? In their last ten home games they have kept clean sheets just 12.5% of the time. That is one clean sheet in eight. One. They have conceded 15 goals at home in that same stretch while scoring 16, so at least they are entertaining. Their home form reads WLDWLDWW across the last eight which looks reasonable on the surface, but the momentum slope is going slightly the wrong way recently. Last five home games: won two, drawn one, lost two. Both teams scored in 60% of those home games.
Away from home their defensive record is even scarier. Zero clean sheets in their last ten away games. Zero. BTTS has landed in 90% of their away matches and over 2.5 goals in 80%. Now I know what you are thinking, this is a home game for New York, calm down Jay. Fair enough. But the overall picture tells you this team cannot keep the ball out of their net.
Chicago Fire: Dangerous Visitors With Their Own Issues
Chicago away from home over their last ten games: three wins, three draws, two losses. 15 goals scored on the road, 13 conceded. Clean sheets in 25% of away games which is better than you might expect but still means three in every four away games see them concede. BTTS has landed in 75% of their away trips over the last ten. Last five away games they have gone LLWWD, so momentum is dipping slightly with that minus 0.5 slope.
At home Chicago have been brilliant. Six wins from ten, scoring 19 and conceding just 12. But we are not playing at Chicago. The question is whether they can take their home form on the road, and the evidence says they score but also concede when they travel.
The only head to head we have is from back in May when New York beat Chicago 3-1 at home. BTTS landed, over 2.5 landed, and four goals were scored. One meeting is basically nothing to go on, but it does at least rhyme with what the form data is telling us.
What the Numbers Are Actually Screaming
Over 2.5 goals has landed in 60% of New York's overall games this season. For Chicago overall it is an extraordinary 90%. Ninety percent. That is not a typo. Look, I know that xG... the fancy expected goals number that Marcus prints off on spreadsheets every week... I know it tells you all sorts of things. But you do not need xG to tell you two teams who cannot defend are going to give you goals. You just need eyes.

The injury list is clean at this stage. No reported absences for either side in the data we have right now. That could change closer to kick-off and I will keep an eye on it, but as it stands both squads appear to be available. You heard it here first if that changes.
