Cardiff's Winless Run Meets Middlesbrough's Home Resolve: Can the Bluebirds Compete at the Riverside?

In practice, the Championship has a habit of making fools of people who say that out loud. But the form book is the form book, and right now it tells a very clear story.

Middlesbrough: Solid at Home, Leaky at the Back

Middlesbrough have not lost in their last five Championship matches. Three wins and two draws. That is a decent run by any measure. The thing is, this lot do not keep clean sheets. In those same five matches, both teams have scored in four of them. Eighty per cent. You cannot build towards anything serious if you are conceding in nearly every game you play.

Look at the evidence. Middlesbrough beat Norwich 4-3. They drew 2-2 with Millwall. They drew 1-1 with Burnley. They beat West Brom 3-1. Only the 1-0 win over QPR was tight and controlled. One clean sheet in five. That is not a defence operating at the required standard. End of.

Zoom out over ten matches and you see the same pattern. Middlesbrough have conceded 14 goals in that window. Four wins, four draws, two losses. The goals for column looks respectable at 17. But 14 against tells you there are problems in behind that have not been sorted. Accountability at the back. That is what is missing. You cannot keep asking your attackers to bail you out every week. It catches up with you.

That said, at home, Middlesbrough have been competitive. They won 3-1 against West Brom and put four past Norwich on their own ground. There is an attacking intent here that will worry Cardiff. Whether Boro can impose that and keep things tight at the other end is the question they need to answer themselves.

Cardiff City: Zero Wins. Zero Clean Sheets. The Numbers Are Damning.

Listen, I do not enjoy laying into a club when they are struggling. But Cardiff City's recent form is genuinely alarming and someone has to say it plainly.

In their last seven Championship matches, Cardiff have not won once. Not one win. Four draws and three losses. They have not kept a single clean sheet in that entire run. Zero. They are conceding goals for fun and creating precious little at the other end. Seven goals scored in seven games. Eleven conceded.

The last five matches make it even worse. Three losses, two draws. Cardiff lost to Bolton Wanderers. They lost 0-2 to Portsmouth. They lost 1-2 to QPR. They drew with Stoke and Sheffield United. No wins. No clean sheets. Four goals scored, eight conceded across those five games.

The thing is, this is a team that is simply not competing hard enough. You look at those numbers and you have to ask serious questions about desire and attitude. Losing to Bolton is one thing. Losing 0-2 to Portsmouth and not even scoring. That is unacceptable. You cannot keep pointing at circumstances. At some point the players on the pitch have to stand up and be counted. Cardiff have not done that consistently enough, and now they travel to a Middlesbrough side with genuine momentum.

The one small defence you could make for Cardiff, and I stress small, is that they have shown some resilience in draws. They held Sheffield United 2-2. They drew 2-2 with Derby. They drew 1-1 with Wrexham. They are not completely toothless. But drawing is not competing for promotion. Drawing is surviving. There is a difference.

Where This Match Is Won and Lost

Middlesbrough's backline needs to wake up. Cardiff may be short of form but they have shown they can score goals in drawn matches. Both teams scoring has happened in sixty per cent of Cardiff's recent games. That BTTS trend does not disappear just because you cross the Severn Bridge. Boro's defenders cannot switch off and expect goals to carry them through.

For Cardiff, the basics have to improve. Compete in the duels. Track your runners. Give your attackers something to work with. You are not going to out-play teams in the Championship week after week. You have to earn the right to play. That means attitude and desire from the first whistle. Right now I am not seeing evidence of that from them on the road.

Middlesbrough's attack has been their strength. Seventeen goals in ten matches is a reasonable return. If they can keep Cardiff pinned back early and make this a difficult afternoon for the visitors, I think Boro win this. The home crowd is a factor at the Riverside and Cardiff's away form gives you no reason to expect them to handle that well.

The Bet

I back one thing hard. Middlesbrough to win. Simple as that. Their home form is solid, their attack is firing, and they are facing a Cardiff side who have not won in seven. Cardiff cannot keep clean sheets away from home. They have not managed one in this entire sample. Middlesbrough's own defensive issues actually work against a Cardiff clean sheet here, but Boro's firepower is the bigger factor.

The thing is, if Cardiff show up with the same attitude they have shown in recent weeks, this could get away from them quickly. Middlesbrough will smell the weakness. Back the home win. One bet. Conviction.
