For Auxerre to win, they need to fix their defensive shape. Three losses in a row before their most recent win is not a blip. That is a recurring issue. Away from home, they conceded three to Angers and three to Lyon. Come to Le Havre and make the same mistakes and you will lose again.

The thing is, neither of these managers can afford to overthink this. Get your defensive basics right. Compete for every header. Close down quickly. Win your individual battles. That is the difference between picking up three points or going home with nothing. End of.

The Verdict

I keep coming back to the same conclusion. These are two sides that are good enough to beat each other and bad enough to lose to each other. Le Havre at home with a crowd behind them should have the edge, but they have shown a troubling inability to push on and take games by the scruff of the neck.

Auxerre's defence has been all over the place in recent weeks. They have the goals in them to hurt Le Havre. But they will concede as well. Both teams to score feels like the honest call here. A tight, scrappy match where neither side manages to be clinical enough to win it comfortably. A draw would surprise nobody. A win for either side requires them to show a standard they have not consistently reached.
