Hertha BSC's Blistering Start Meets Magdeburg's Away Day Firepower in Sunday's 2. Bundesliga Cracker

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Right, let's talk about this one. Sunday lunchtime, the Olympiastadion, and we've got a match that on paper looks like a proper early-season statement game. Hertha BSC versus Magdeburg. Two wins from two for the hosts. A chaotic, goal-drenched away record for the visitors. Honestly, I'm already excited and I haven't even had my second coffee.

Hertha Flying... But Is It Sustainable?

Look at the standings first. Hertha are second in the 2. Bundesliga with six points from two games, five goals scored and only one conceded. That's a brilliant start. They're level on points with whoever's top and the early-season vibes at the club must be decent right now.

But here's where it gets interesting. Look at the fixtures and the form data over a longer stretch and a more complicated picture emerges. In their last ten games overall, Hertha have won four, drawn one and lost five. That's not a top-two side's form book, mate. And at home specifically over the last ten, it reads two wins, two draws, three losses. So the early-season results are great, but the underlying rhythm hasn't always been there.

The home form string over the last five reads WWLLL. Win, win, then three straight losses. That momentum slope is positive right now, which is encouraging, but those three defeats are sitting there in the recent memory. Clean sheets at home have been basically non-existent too, with a zero percent clean sheet rate in the last five home games. Zero. Hertha are scoring but they are absolutely letting teams in as well.

Last season, for context, Hertha finished seventh in the 2. Bundesliga. Solid enough but hardly promotion form. This new campaign has started with a bang and the supporters will be daring to dream. But Sunday will tell us a lot more about where Hertha actually are.

Magdeburg Away From Home Is a Rollercoaster You Want to Be On

Now then. Magdeburg. Tenth in the table after two games, three points, but their away record over the last ten games is genuinely something. Four wins, zero draws, three losses from seven away games. And the goals... 18 scored, 12 conceded. The BTTS rate in those away games is 71 percent. The over 2.5 goals rate is a staggering 85 percent.

Let me just say that again. In nearly nine out of ten of Magdeburg's recent away games, there have been more than two and a half goals. That's madness. Absolute scenes for anyone who likes a bit of drama in their football.

They are not a defensive team on their travels, that much is clear. They concede. A lot. But they also score. A lot. Their last season finish was fourteenth in this division, so they've had to scrap for everything. And based on the away data, scrapping is something they're very comfortable with.

There is a concern for Magdeburg heading into this though. They arrive carrying a significant injury list. Five players are currently out, including two long-term absentees who have been missing since as far back as January and February. Two of the absences are moderate injuries picked up in July. That's a depleted squad heading into a tough away day, and it could matter in the final third or when they need to hold a lead.

The Goals Angle Is the Story Here

Honestly, this is the thing I keep coming back to. Both teams carry a goalmouth threat. Neither team locks the back door particularly well. Hertha's BTTS rate in the last five games overall sits at 60 percent. Magdeburg's overall last ten has a 50 percent BTTS rate. And when Magdeburg travel, as we've established, goals follow them around like a lost dog.

I actually looked at the numbers for once and the over 2.5 goals rate for Hertha's last five overall games is 60 percent as well. So both teams, recent form, goals are happening. This does not look like a cagey 0-0 waiting to happen.

The thing that catches my eye with the stats nerds' beloved xG... and yes I know what xG is, it stands for expected goals, it's the thing Marcus uses to tell me my eyes are lying to me... Hertha's overall ten-game xG for is listed at 6 while they've actually scored 10. They're outperforming expectation. That can catch up with a team. Maybe not today, maybe not this week. But it's worth knowing.

What Actually Happens on Sunday?

Right, here's my read. Hertha at home, good start to the season, crowd behind them. They're the favourites and rightly so. But Magdeburg don't come to sit in. They travel to score. Their momentum slope overall is slightly negative which suggests they might be coming off a slightly dipping run, but that away record is the real calling card.

The home side's form at the Olympiastadion goes hot and cold quickly. WWLLL over five home games doesn't exactly scream fortress. And with Magdeburg's injury issues, they might just go direct and chaotic rather than trying to play their way through Hertha.

This has goals written all over it. Hertha probably edge it. But don't be shocked if Magdeburg nick one or two while conceding two or three themselves. That's very much on the table.

The Saturday Special? Absolutely Not Saturday, But You Know What I Mean

I'm going big on this. BTTS. Both teams to score. With Hertha's inability to keep clean sheets at home and Magdeburg's away goal output, I genuinely cannot talk myself out of it. Don't @ me if Hertha somehow keep a clean sheet. It'll be the first in ages and I'll be devastated but I'll own it.

Could even flirt with over 2.5 goals given everything we've just been through. Shove them both on a double if you're feeling brave. A fiver on a double never hurt anyone. You heard it here first.

Hertha to win, both teams to score. That's the call. Back to the drawing board if not, but I feel good about this one.
