Right. So we are two days away from AFC Wimbledon hosting Reading in what is already shaping up to be a really interesting little League One fixture. Saturday 22 August, 3pm kick-off, and both of these sides desperately need something from this game. The big picture is becoming clearer as we get closer to kick-off. Let me walk you through everything.

Where Both Sides Are At

But here is the thing. Look at their home form in the new League One season specifically. One game, one draw. They drew their home opener 1-1. So at Plough Lane there are signs of life. They scored at home. Both teams scored at home. That BTTS rate at home this season is sitting at 100 percent, which is exactly one game worth of evidence but still, it is something to build on.

Reading come in 17th after game one, having lost 4-3. Four three! Goals everywhere. They are a side that clearly does not know how to keep a clean sheet right now, and their away record last season across all contexts was pretty rough too. Five losses from five away games in their last five away outings in the previous campaign. No wins on the road at all in that stretch. Their momentum slope is actually negative going into this, which is a polite way of saying the early season vibes are not great for Vauxhall Road visitors.

The Form Book Says...

Honestly, the form for Wimbledon last season was rough. 19th place, 53 points from 46 games, 15 wins and 23 losses. They conceded 72 goals last year. Seventy two. In League One. So the defensive concerns are real and they have been real for a while. Reading finished 12th last season with 63 points, which looks significantly better on paper. Mid-table respectability versus a side that was genuinely fighting to stay up.

So on paper, Reading are the better side. On paper. But we are barely two games into a new season and football does not care about paper. Wimbledon are at home. The crowd will be up for it. And Reading are leaking goals from everywhere right now, 4 conceded in game one alone.

There is no head-to-head data available for this one so we cannot go down that rabbit hole. No injuries listed either, which means both managers have options. Though the lack of squad news at this stage means we are going in a little blind on team selection.

Jay's Take

Look, this is one of those games where I genuinely feel for Wimbledon fans. They finished 19th last season, got battered on the opening day without scoring, and now they need a result at home to avoid going into an early season panic. The pressure on this game for the home side is real.

Reading, though, have the quality advantage based on where both clubs finished last season. And they have goals in them, even if their defending is all over the place right now. Their last few away trips in League One this new campaign have seen them win and draw, so they carry a threat on the road.

Here is my honest read. Wimbledon will set up to be hard to beat at home. Reading will have too much going forward. I think goals happen. I think BTTS is almost certain in this one. Whether Reading can nick it at the end, that I am less sure about.
