Watford 0-0 Middlesbrough: Boro Dominate But Leave With Nothing

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Watford 0-0 Middlesbrough. Write it down. Look at it. Now tell me how Middlesbrough do not win that football match.

74 per cent possession. 18 shots to 8. Four big chances created. Four big chances missed. They hit the woodwork. Their keeper made one save all afternoon. One. That is not a performance that ends in a point. That is a performance that ends in a win, unless you have a problem with the basics of putting the ball in the net.

Middlesbrough had a problem with the basics of putting the ball in the net.

What Middlesbrough Did Right

Everything except score. The thing is, that is the only thing that matters, so we can keep this section short.

Boro controlled this game from the first whistle. 669 passes to Watford's 227. 90 per cent pass accuracy. 136 attacks to 72. 12 key passes. 10 accurate crosses. They moved the ball with real purpose and they asked questions of the Watford defence repeatedly. Watford's goalkeeper made four saves. Without those saves, we are talking about a very different result. The Watford keeper was their best player. That tells you everything about how the afternoon went.

Middlesbrough's pressing was sharp too. They won 47 duels, completed 11 tackles won from 17 attempted, and registered 11 interceptions. They were not just sitting on the ball. They were competing properly. They were doing the defensive basics right.

So why are they driving home with one point instead of three. Because four big chances came and went. Four. All four missed. That is unacceptable at this level. End of.

Watford Were Poor. And They Nearly Nicked It.

Listen, Watford were second best for most of this match. 26 per cent possession. Eight shots total. One shot on target. Their goalkeeper was their standout performer, which is a polite way of saying their outfield players were largely invisible going forward.

Watford had conceded nine goals across their previous five Championship matches coming into this one, so a clean sheet was not exactly the obvious outcome. Across those five matches, Watford won two and lost three. They were battered 5-1 by Cardiff City in one of those results. The defensive improvement here deserved credit, even if it was largely forced upon them by circumstance rather than tactical brilliance.

They had Callum Brittain booked for a foul in the 21st minute and Sam Byram followed him into the referee's notebook in the 43rd. Byram was then substituted at half-time, replaced by Max Arfsten. When your left side is picking up yellows and getting hooked at the break, you are not having a great afternoon. Sebastian Berhalter collected a third Watford yellow on 59 minutes and was then replaced by Myles Peart-Harris on 66 minutes. Three yellow cards in a game where they barely had the ball. That is poor discipline.

The thing is, Watford still nearly took all three points on the counter. That is the nature of football. You can be thoroughly outplayed and still win. They did not win. They did not deserve to win. But the point keeps something alive for them, and sometimes a clean sheet when you are playing badly is worth more than the numbers suggest.

Omar Traoré and the Simulation Yellow

Watford's Omar Traoré was involved in two notable moments. He came on as a substitute in the 14th minute, replacing Krépin Diatta. That is an early change. Something was clearly not right with Diatta before the match had barely started.

Then on 71 minutes, Traoré picked up a yellow card for simulation. Listen, if you are going down looking for decisions when your team has had one shot on target all afternoon, you have badly misjudged the situation. That is the kind of attitude that costs teams. You earn nothing by going to ground when you have not been touched. The referee was right to book him.

Middlesbrough's Injury Concerns

It is worth noting that Middlesbrough came into this game with three players listed as out through injury, all classified as major. All three absences had been in place for some time. That context matters. A side already missing significant personnel, still generating 18 shots and 74 per cent possession away from home, suggests there is real quality in this squad. The problem on Saturday was converting that quality into goals.

The Signals and What We Backed

The Verdict

Middlesbrough were the dominant side from start to finish. They were better in possession, better in attack, better in the air, and better at competing across the pitch. Watford defended with their backs against the wall for long periods and their goalkeeper had the game of his life.

The result is a point each. Middlesbrough will be furious. Rightly so. Four big chances missed in an away match where you have done everything else right is not good enough. That is about desire in front of goal and about the accountability that comes with being a striker or an attacking midfielder at this level.

Watford take a point from a game they had no right to take anything from. Their form across the last five Championship matches, two wins and three losses, shows a side that cannot put together any kind of consistency. This point will feel better than it should.

Middlesbrough go home with one point when three were there for the taking. That is on the players who had the big chances. No excuses. You compete for 90 minutes and do everything right, then you have to put the ball in the net. That is the basics. They did not do the basics when it counted most.
