Virtus Entella 2-2 Vicenza result, stats and report

Two goals apiece. Four yellow cards. A match that had everything a neutral could want and nothing a manager on either side could be fully satisfied with. Virtus Entella and Vicenza played out a 2-2 draw in Serie B on Sunday afternoon, and while the scoreline looks tidy enough on paper, what it does not tell you is how scrappy, competitive, and at times genuinely entertaining this fixture was.

The Basics Were There. The Composure Was Not Always.

Vicenza were not without their own discipline issues. Andrea Tiritiello picked up a yellow card on 29 minutes for a foul. Then Bernat Guiu, the man who had just assisted the equaliser, was booked himself just two minutes into the second half. Chiappella, a Vicenza man, was carded in first-half stoppage time for an argument. That tells you something about Vicenza's attitude in the final minutes of the half. You do not win anything by losing your head at 45 plus two.

The Numbers Tell a Familiar Story

Vicenza controlled the ball. They had 54 per cent possession, completed 271 successful passes out of 318, and created 30 dangerous attacks to Entella's 14. On paper, Vicenza were the better side in terms of control.

But here is the thing. Entella had five shots on target to Vicenza's four. Entella scored twice from eight total shots. Vicenza had 13 shots, scored once from four on target, and missed one of their big chances. That is not a question of desire. That is a question of execution in the final third. Vicenza had the ball. They just could not consistently make it count.

Entella's interception count stands out too. Fourteen interceptions to Vicenza's nine. When Entella did not have the ball, their players worked. They competed. They got their bodies in the way. That is the kind of defensive effort that keeps you in matches when the opposition is carrying the threat that Vicenza were generating through their attack.

Mattia Valoti, who had been booked on 36 minutes, was replaced by Loris Zonta on 62 minutes. Sensible management. You do not keep a yellow-carded midfielder on the pitch if you can help it when the game is still live.

Vicenza rotated too. Bernat Guiu came off on 73 minutes, replaced by Giacomo Corona. Given that Guiu had already been booked, that substitution was coming sooner or later.

The decisive moment of the match arrived on 75 minutes. Silvio Merkaj picked up a pass from Lorenzo Caferri, and drilled a right-foot shot into the net. Entella 2-1 Vicenza. The home side had competed their way back into the lead and the ground would have lifted.

But they could not hold it. Vicenza pushed on, and the match ended 2-2. The data does not supply the name of the scorer for Vicenza's second goal in the events sheet beyond what is already listed, but the result is plain. Entella led twice and could not see it out. That is the most frustrating kind of draw there is.

What This Draw Means for Both Sides

The thing is, Entella did enough today to win. They scored twice, they intercepted well, they showed desire when they had to. But they conceded twice, including a header from a set piece or cross situation that they should be dealing with at this level. Standards. You set them or you do not.

Vicenza came in with two completed Serie B matches in their rolling sample, one win and one loss. Vicenza beat Catanzaro 3-2 in their previous outing, which showed they can score goals.
