Right. That was a game. Proper European football, proper madness, five goals, four yellow cards for the home side, and a winner with eight minutes to go. Varaždin vs Hradec Králové in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying round delivered everything you want from a summer European tie. Scenes.
Look, it was never going to be a clean, comfortable night for Varaždin. Two yellows in the first 15 minutes told you the tone was going to be feisty. Both cards came from fouls for the home side, and the referee was clearly in no mood to let things slide early on.
Then, just when you thought the early bookings might disrupt Varaždin's rhythm, they went and scored. Minute 24. A field goal, with a nice assist recorded. They had the lead and the Varaždin fans could breathe. For three minutes, anyway.
Because Hradec Králové came straight back at them. Minute 27. Three minutes after going behind, the Czech side levelled it up. Just like that. 1-1 at the half hour mark, and suddenly this tie had a completely different feel to it.
Varaždin made a substitution before the break, at 37 minutes, which is worth noting. You don't make changes that early unless something is wrong, whether that's tactical or a knock on one of the lads who had already picked up a card. Either way, the manager was reacting.
Hradec Králové came out for the second half with something clearly said at half time. Their substitution right at the restart, minute 46, suggested their manager wanted a tactical tweak too. And it worked, initially. Minute 56, Hradec scored their second. 2-1 to the away side.
Now this is where it gets interesting. Varaždin were behind in a European qualifier, at home, having already given away four yellows by the end of the night. The pressure was real.
Their response? A double substitution at 61 minutes. Two changes at once, both tactical, bringing on fresh legs and replacing both players who had picked up early cautions. Smart management. Get the liabilities off the pitch before the referee makes your night even harder.
Here is the bit that actually impressed me. Varaždin didn't panic. They kept pressing, kept building. Look at the stats. 115 attacking actions compared to Hradec's 96. 40 dangerous attacks to 39. 55 percent possession. These lads were on top for most of the match in terms of territory. The scoreline was flattering Hradec for a spell there.
Minute 68, Varaždin equalised. Another field goal, same assist provider as the opener, which tells you that one player was absolutely pulling the strings all night for the home side. That second goal had a quality feel to it.
Then came the moment. Minute 82. Varaždin took the lead for the second time. 3-2. With eight minutes plus stoppage time to hold. And they did.
There were more substitutions, a yellow card in the 90th minute for the home side (two of them, actually, at the same time, because why not add to the drama), and a nervy finish. But Varaždin got over the line.
Honestly, this is the bit where I looked at the numbers for once and went a bit cross-eyed. Varaždin had 11 total shots to Hradec's 14. They both had 5 shots on target. But Varaždin scored three and Hradec scored two from those equal shots on target numbers. Clinical finishing from the home side, genuinely.
There is a stat called xG, which basically stands for "expected goals" and means a load of clever people on computers decide whether your goals were actually good enough to count. Don't @ me, but xG would probably say Varaždin slightly overperformed here given Hradec had more total shots and four corners to Varaždin's one. And yet. Three goals, a win, into the next round. You heard it here first, results matter more than the algorithm, mate.
What those stats do show clearly is that Hradec created plenty. 14 shots, 4 corners, 9 off target efforts. They were not outclassed. This was a genuine contest. Varaždin just had the edge in terms of finishing and game management when it really mattered.
Look at the fixtures ahead and you have to worry about this. Four yellow cards in a single game is not sustainable in European competition. Two of those came inside the first 15 minutes. Both players who picked up early cautions were hooked at 61 minutes, which was the right call, but you are asking a lot of your squad when you are making defensive substitutions before the hour mark just to manage card risk.
Hradec were no angels either, picking up a yellow at 79 minutes and committing 16 fouls across the 90. But they managed their discipline better overall, only one card against Varaždin's four.
In a two-legged European tie format, or as this competition progresses, any Varaždin player sitting on a booking from this match needs to be careful. One more and they are watching the next game from the stands.
Varaždin's home form coming into this was genuinely strong. Four wins and a draw in their last five at home, 8 goals scored and only 3 conceded. The vibes at their ground were good, and this result adds to that. Their overall form of WWDLL had raised a few questions, but this is the kind of win that refocuses everyone.
Hradec Králové, travelling away from home, have that WLLWL away form string which tells a story. They showed up and genuinely competed here. The Czech top flight sends teams into Europe who can handle the step up. They will take heart from scoring twice and creating plenty, even in defeat.
But tonight belongs to Varaždin. A proper European result. Came back from behind twice. Showed character. Won ugly in the best way possible. The Croatian side are through, and on this showing, they will be a difficult side to beat at home in the next round too.
