Varaždin vs Hajduk Split

Right. Let's talk about this. Because if you weren't watching Varaždin versus Hajduk Split on Sunday afternoon, you missed proper scenes. A 3.40 outsider. A Croatian giant coming to town. The lad who came on, he is just a set of letters and numbers to us from the data, but he headed Varaždin in front on 53 minutes. A header. Classic old school stuff. Right in front of the home crowd. Limbs, presumably.

Then three minutes later, 56 minutes, Hajduk pull it back. A left foot shot, assisted by the same player who had picked up a yellow card earlier in the game. Bit of redemption there. Game on. All square. You are sat there thinking Hajduk are going to kick on and win this comfortably now, aren't you. That is what you are thinking.

But then 62 minutes arrives. A right foot shot from another Varaždin man, and that is 2-1. Nine minutes of football, two goals for the home side, one in between for the visitors. VAR got involved late on at 88 minutes for Hajduk but nothing came of it. Final whistle. Varaždin win. Honestly, brilliant.

The Stats Tell a Complicated Story

Here is where it gets interesting. Because if you just look at the stats, you would not think Varaždin won this game. Not at all.

Hajduk had 54 percent possession. They registered 116 attacks to Varaždin's 101, and their dangerous attacks, 62 to 42, tell you they were the team doing most of the threatening. Lots of possession, lots of movement, but not enough of it in the dangerous areas when it mattered. Varaždin sat deep, stayed compact, and when they got their chances inside the box, they buried them.

Varaždin's Game Plan Was Spot On

And their approach today was very deliberate. Only 46 percent of the ball. One corner all game. Sixty-two long passes compared to Hajduk's thirty. They were direct. They were physical. They won their duels, 53 of them. Their dribble success rate was 58 percent compared to Hajduk's 30 percent. When Varaždin got on the ball in tight areas, they kept it. When Hajduk did, they gave it away more often.

Twenty fouls from Hajduk in this game. That is a team getting frustrated. That is a team that could not handle what Varaždin were doing to them physically. Two yellow cards each, plenty of free kicks flying about, but Varaždin kept their shape and their nerve.

Hajduk's Away Problem Is Real

Look, Hajduk at home are a different animal. Six wins from seven in the last ten home league games. They are absolutely flying at their own place. But away from home across their last five? One win, three draws, one loss. Goals for and against perfectly level at six each. They just cannot replicate it on the road.

Their away form momentum slope was sitting at minus 0.5 before this game, which is the wrong direction. And now they have started the season with a loss. The only previous meeting between these two sides saw Hajduk win 3-1, so there was history there, but Varaždin clearly were not reading from the same script today.

But Varaždin at home, playing this way, on the counter, physical, efficient in the box, they are going to cause problems for a lot of sides this season. You heard it here first.

The Croatian 1. HNL is only getting started. But what a way to kick things off. Don't @ me, but Varaždin might just be the most interesting side in this league to follow this season.
