Valencia 0-0 Athletic Club: Five Big Chances Wasted as Valencia Rue Wasteful Night at Mestalla

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Valencia 0-0 Athletic Club. Five big chances created. Five big chances missed. That is not bad luck. That is a problem.

I will not dress it up. Valencia needed three points tonight. Their recent La Liga form, one win from five matches, tells you everything about where this club is right now. They had Athletic Club on the ropes at points in this game. They could not finish. That is unacceptable at this level. End of.

Valencia Dominated Without Converting

The thing is, Valencia were not poor in the basics tonight. They had 16 total shots. They had 13 shots inside the box. They won 51 duels. They made 16 interceptions and competed with real intensity across the pitch. You cannot say this was a team that did not show desire.

But desire without execution means nothing. Valencia created five big chances and missed all five. Their goalkeeper was called upon only once all night. Athletic Club's goalkeeper made three saves. You do not need a calculator to understand what that means. Valencia did the hard work and threw away the reward.

Dani Raba picked up a yellow card in the 19th minute for a foul, and was substituted off at half-time alongside Hugo Duro, replaced by Luis Rioja and David Otorbi. The manager clearly felt changes were needed to unlock the game. They were not enough.

Athletic Club Were Exactly What They Are

Athletic Club came here with a plan. They had 63 per cent possession, 568 passes, and their attackers were constantly looking to work the channels. They created 140 attacks to Valencia's 69. They had six corners to Valencia's two. On paper, Athletic Club looked the more dangerous side across the full ninety minutes.

But here is what matters. Athletic Club created zero big chances. Their goalkeeper made three saves to keep the clean sheet. Their defensive structure was sound enough that Valencia's volume of attempts, however wasteful, never genuinely threatened to cost them.

Aymeric Laporte picked up a booking for a foul in the 38th minute, and Beñat Gerenabarrena was carded for handball on the stroke of half-time, which saw him replaced by Mikel Jauregizar at the interval. Athletic Club dealt with those disruptions without blinking. That is what well-organised sides do. They absorb, they adjust, they do not panic.

Cem Gürsoy was booked for a foul in the 57th minute and immediately replaced as Athletic Club made three changes on 63 minutes, bringing on Jesús Areso, Gorka Guruzeta, and Alejandro Rego. Guruzeta was then replaced by Maroan Sannadi just five minutes later. Athletic Club managed their resources intelligently and kept their shape.

Valencia's Injury Crisis Is Not an Excuse. It Is a Reality.

Valencia are carrying seven players out injured right now. Three of those are long-term or major absences. One player is not expected back until March 2027. Another not until December 2026. These are not small problems.

Listen, I am not in the business of making excuses for a team that missed five clear chances in a home match. Standards do not drop because your squad is thin. But accountability also means being honest about context. Valencia's manager is working with a depleted group. The squad depth simply is not there to absorb this volume of unavailability.

Harvey Elliott came on in the 74th minute, and Filip Ugrinic and Jesús Vázquez were introduced in the final ten minutes. Valencia threw bodies at the problem late. It did not work. When you have already wasted your big chances in the first hour, late substitutions are window dressing.

Pepelu was booked for a foul in the 87th minute. César Tárrega picked up a yellow card in the 90th. Valencia were getting desperate, getting scrappy. That is what happens when you cannot put the ball in the net when it matters.

The Head-to-Head Said Valencia Should Win Here

In the two previous La Liga meetings between these sides, Valencia won both. Valencia kept clean sheets in both. The head-to-head suggested Mestalla was a good place for Valencia against this opponent. That history counts for nothing if you cannot score. Valencia have now failed to score in both their La Liga home defeats to Sevilla and against Barcelona in this sample. Their only home win came 1-0 against Deportivo Alaves. The attacking output simply is not consistent enough.

The Verdict

Valencia have one win, one draw, and three losses in their last five La Liga matches. They have conceded eleven goals in that period. Tonight they at least kept a clean sheet, which is something. But you cannot build from a 0-0 draw when you have wasted five big chances at home. That is points dropped. That is two points instead of three. Over a season, those moments are the difference between where you finish and where you wanted to be.

Athletic Club, for their part, can be satisfied. Two wins, two draws, and one loss in five La Liga matches. A 60 per cent clean sheet rate in that sample. They are a well-drilled, organised side who compete for everything. Tonight they came, they did not concede, and they left with a point. Job done for them.

For Valencia, the questions are harder. The basics of finishing cannot keep being ignored. Five big chances in one match and zero goals. Someone has to be accountable for that. The attitude and the work rate were there tonight. The execution was not. That is the difference between a side going somewhere and a side standing still.
