Vaduz's Winless Start Makes Home Clash Against Lausanne Sport a Must-Not-Lose

Jay Thompson ·

Right, let's talk about this one. Vaduz vs Lausanne Sport on Saturday afternoon. Not the glamour pick of the weekend, I'll grant you that. But sometimes the most interesting matches are the ones where both sides are quietly desperate. And mate, both of these sides have reasons to be nervous.

The Home Side: Bottom of the League and Feeling It

Look at the standings. Vaduz are sitting at the foot of the Swiss Super League with zero points from three games. Played three, lost three. Five goals scored, eight conceded. That is a rough start by anyone's standards.

Now here is the bit that does my head in though. Look at their home form. In their last five at home, Vaduz have won one and drawn one. They have scored six goals at home and only conceded two. Every single home game in that run has gone over 2.5 goals. Every one. So they are a completely different animal on their own patch compared to wherever they have been shipping points away from home.

They are averaging 22 shots per game at home. Twenty-two. Nine on target per game. They are bossing possession at 62 percent and winning six corners a match. That is a team that at home, genuinely has a go. The momentum slope is dipping a little, which tells you confidence is not exactly through the roof right now, but the underlying home numbers are decent.

The problem? Those three league defeats have clearly come away from home, and the season points tally tells a brutal story. Trust the process, as they say... though three losses and no points makes that a hard sell even for the most patient fan in the Rheinpark.

The Away Side: Winning On Paper, Falling Apart On the Road

Lausanne Sport come in sitting sixth in the table with five points from three games. Sounds reasonable enough on the surface. But look at the fixtures a bit closer and the away form data tells a very different story.

In their last five away games, Lausanne have won one and lost four. One win, four defeats. They have scored just two goals on the road in that run while conceding ten. Ten. Their clean sheet percentage away from home is just 20 percent, and their BTTS rate on the road drops to 20 percent too, which actually suggests they are just getting beaten rather than being involved in open exchanges.

Their overall last ten games make for similarly uncomfortable reading. Two wins, two draws, six defeats. Nineteen goals conceded in ten matches. That is nearly two per game on average. And yet here they are, sitting sixth, which tells you a lot about how early in the season we are and how the points have been distributed.

At home, Lausanne have been a bit more entertaining if not exactly watertight. Their home BTTS rate sits at 80 percent over their last five, with over 2.5 goals landing in 80 percent of those matches too. So when they are comfortable, goals tend to happen. But comfortable away from home? That has not been the vibe at all recently.

There are also a couple of injury concerns for Lausanne. Two players are currently out with moderate injuries, one of them with no expected return date confirmed. The data does not give us names, but two absentees is two absentees and it limits rotation options.

The Numbers That Actually Matter Here

Honestly, I actually looked at the numbers for once and a few things jumped out. Vaduz's xG for the season is 6.1 and their xG against is 6.7. Now xG, that is the thing where nerds tell you how many goals a team should have scored based on the quality of their chances... and I will admit, sometimes it does tell you something useful. In this case, it says Vaduz are creating decent opportunities but not nailing them. Lausanne's xG for is 2.8 against an xG against of 3.5, which suggests they are actually a touch fortunate to have the points they do.

What does all that mean in plain English? Vaduz are probably a better team than their league position suggests, certainly at home. Lausanne are fragile on the road and their attacking numbers do not inspire confidence.

What Happens on Saturday?

Look at the fixtures again. Vaduz at home, Lausanne coming in on the back of one win in their last five away. Vaduz desperate for their first points of the season. The crowd behind them, hopefully. The home numbers showing a team that actually creates chances and scores goals on their own ground.

Lausanne's away defensive record is genuinely alarming. Conceding ten goals in five away matches, only keeping one clean sheet in that run. Coming up against a Vaduz side that shoots 22 times per game at home with nine on target... that combination makes me think goals are coming from the home side at least.

I'm going big on this. Vaduz to win and over 2.5 goals in the match. The home side need this badly, they perform better in front of their own fans, and Lausanne's away defence has been all over the place. You heard it here first. Vaduz bounce off the bottom with three points and someone somewhere is very pleased they backed it.

Don't @ me if Lausanne somehow nick a 1-0. These things happen. Back to the drawing board if so. But the data points one way here and I am not ignoring it.

The Verdict

Vaduz need a result more than their opponents do. Their home form suggests they are capable of delivering one. Lausanne are inconsistent away from home and defensively shaky on the road. This feels like a match where the home crowd and the desperation of a team without a point could be decisive factors. Saturday at 17:00 UK time. Get it on.
