Tromsø vs Vålerenga Preview: Second Place on the Line as Table-Toppers Host Struggling Oslo Side

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Last updated 26 June 2026. Right, we are still a couple of weeks out from this one but there is already plenty to dig into. Tromsø vs Vålerenga on Saturday 11 July in the Norwegian Eliteserien. Second versus ninth. A side who look like genuine title challengers hosting a team who absolutely cannot buy a win away from home. Let's get into it.

The Table Does Not Lie

Look at the standings. Tromsø are sitting second with 25 points from 13 games. Seven wins, four draws, two losses. That is a serious return. The only side above them has played three fewer games and has 27 points, so Tromsø are very much in the conversation for something special this season.

Vålerenga, on the other hand, are ninth. Fourteen points from 11 games. Four wins, two draws, five losses. They are only goal difference away from being dragged into a relegation scrap if things go sideways. The gap between these two clubs right now is not just a few places on the table. It is a chasm in terms of form and confidence.

Tromsø Form: Solid at Home, Wobbling Overall

Honestly, the home form for Tromsø is where this gets interesting. Over their last ten home games they have won five, drawn two and lost one. That is a proper home record. Fourteen goals scored, seven conceded. They are hard to beat on their own patch.

The last five overall though... look, DDLWD is not exactly setting the world on fire, is it. One win in five on all fronts, four goals scored, seven conceded. The momentum slope is trending slightly negative. They are not playing badly but they are not at their best either.

Still. At home they are a different beast. Two wins, two draws, one loss in their last five home games specifically. And over ten home games that record holds up really well. Tromsø at Alfheim is a proper test for anyone. The model has them at 57% to win this and honestly, looking at the home data, that feels about right to me.

There are injury concerns to note. Two long-term absentees for the hosts, both out since last year and with no expected return date. You hate to see it. Could be disrupting the squad depth heading into the second half of the season.

Vålerenga Away Form: Genuinely Rough

Right, here is where it gets ugly for Vålerenga. Their away record over the last five games reads LLLDW. That is three straight losses before a draw and a win to end the sequence. Four goals scored on the road, nine conceded. Nine. Their away clean sheet percentage sits at just 20% and their momentum slope away from home is minus 0.7. That is a side in freefall when they travel.

Now to be fair, at home Vålerenga are actually decent. Two wins, one draw, two losses in their last five home games, and their overall numbers show they create chances. Twenty shots per game, nine on target, 52% possession on average. They press, they have the ball, they look like a proper football side... when they are at home.

The second they travel, something changes. The confidence drains away. They concede almost two goals per game on the road. That is not a blip. That is a pattern.

They also have two long-term injury absentees of their own, both out since October with no return date. So whatever is happening with their away form, they are managing it without a full squad.

Goals, BTTS, and the Betting Angle

Okay so I actually looked at the numbers for once and here is what jumped out at me. Vålerenga's overall BTTS rate is 60% in their last five games. Both teams score in six out of ten of their matches basically. They leak goals but they score them too.

Tromsø's BTTS rate at home over five games is 40%. Over ten home games it drops to 25%. So Tromsø at home tend to keep things tighter, which makes sense given they have conceded only seven in ten home games this season.

The over 2.5 goals market is interesting. Vålerenga's overall games go over 2.5 about 60% of the time recently. Tromsø's home games go over 2.5 only 37.5% of the time in the last ten. There is a tension there. Vålerenga want to go at teams but Tromsø's home defensive record suggests they might just shut this down.

I'm going big on this: Tromsø to win and under 2.5 goals feels like the play here. The hosts are solid at home, Vålerenga travel terribly, and Tromsø's home games tend to be tight affairs. Don't @ me if Vålerenga bang in three on the road. It happens. But the data says it is unlikely.

Head to Head: A Blank Slate

Look, the data sheet has no head-to-head records for us to work with here. Genuinely nothing. So we cannot fall back on historical meetings between these two. We are going purely off current form and context, which is fine. Sometimes the numbers in front of you tell you everything you need to know.

The Verdict

Tromsø are the class act in this fixture right now. Second in the table, strong home record, playing in front of their own fans. Vålerenga are genuinely worrying away from Oslo. Nine goals conceded in five away games, a form string of LLLDW on the road, and a negative momentum slope. The scenes if Vålerenga somehow nicked a result up in Tromsø would be proper madness. But the vibes are firmly with the home side here.

Back to the drawing board if they drop points but I am backing Tromsø to handle business at home. Come on then.
