Sunderland 0-2 Dinamo Zagreb: Wasted Chances and No Desire to Show For It

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Sunderland lost 2-0 to Dinamo Zagreb at home in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night. That is the sentence that matters. Everything else is detail.

Zagreb Took Their Chances. Sunderland Did Not.

Luka Stojkovic put Dinamo Zagreb ahead on 22 minutes with a right-foot finish. Dion Beljo made it two on 39 minutes, with Stojkovic providing the assist. The game was done before half-time. Sunderland spent the rest of the evening proving they could have more of the ball without actually doing anything useful with it.

The thing is, Sunderland created big chances. Four of them. They missed all four. Dinamo Zagreb created two big chances and missed one. That is the difference between a team that competes and a team that just performs. When it mattered, Zagreb were clinical. Sunderland were not. End of.

The Numbers Tell You Nothing You Could Not See

Sunderland had 62 per cent possession. They made 455 passes at 84 per cent accuracy. They had 17 shots in total, seven on target. They hit the woodwork three times. Three. And they still could not score.

Zagreb had 38 per cent possession and nine shots. Their goalkeeper made seven saves. That is a goalkeeper who was asked to work and did his job. Sunderland's goalkeeper made one save all night. One. Because Zagreb came here with a plan, executed it, and went home.

Listen, possession and shots mean nothing if you cannot finish. Sunderland put 26 crosses into the box and only seven of them found a team-mate. Zagreb put 11 in and found one. The basics of delivery were failing Sunderland all night. You can dominate a game from set-pieces and open play and still lose if nobody is converting. That is what happened here.

The Discipline Problem

Sunderland picked up three yellow cards on the night. Granit Xhaka was booked for a foul in the 28th minute. Kevin Danso followed in the 36th. Trai Hume, who came on as a half-time substitute, was carded on 55 minutes. That is unacceptable from a squad that is supposed to have experience and leadership.

Zagreb committed 17 fouls to Sunderland's nine, but their discipline was more calculated. They fouled to break up play, not out of frustration. There is a difference. Sunderland's cards, particularly the two in the first half when Zagreb were already a goal up, suggested a team that was rattled and not thinking clearly. That is an attitude problem, not a tactical one.

The Half-Time Response That Was Not a Response

Sunderland made four substitutions at half-time. Enzo Le Fée, Trai Hume, Reinildo Mandava, and Noah Sadiki all came on. That is an aggressive move. It signals the manager knew things were not working. Fair enough. Except the second half produced the same result as the first. Zero goals. The problems were not personnel problems. They were execution problems. You can shuffle the pack all you like, but if nobody in that squad has the conviction to put the ball in the net, it does not matter who you throw on.

Sunderland also had a VAR incident in the 47th minute involving Wilson Isidor, who was then substituted off for Brian Brobbey on 64 minutes. Whatever that check produced, it did not change the scoreline. The game was settled long before the hour mark.

Zagreb Deserve Credit. They Were Compact and Dangerous.

Zagreb came here without the ball and made it work. They sat deep, made nine interceptions to Sunderland's five, and hit Sunderland on the counter with real conviction. Their ball security was excellent. An 83 per cent ball safe rating against a home side pushing for goals tells you they were organised and committed to their shape.

Stojkovic was excellent before being withdrawn on 64 minutes. He scored the first and assisted the second. Beljo finished well with his left foot for the second goal and lasted until the 70th minute. These were players who performed when it counted. That is what accountability looks like on a football pitch.

Zagreb came into this match having lost to NEC Nijmegen 4-2 in their previous Europa League away fixture, then beaten Anderlecht 1-0 in their last home match. A win here was not guaranteed by any form guide. They came and competed anyway. Sunderland, despite going into this on the back of two wins from their last three Europa League matches, could not match them when it mattered.

Three Injuries and No Excuses

Sunderland have three significant injury absences in this competition. All three are major. That matters, and it is worth noting. But it cannot explain four missed big chances and a goalkeeper who barely touched the ball. At some point, the players on the pitch have to be accountable for what happens on the pitch. The desire to win this game was not there in the decisive moments. That is on the players who were available and selected.

What Sunderland Must Fix

The standards have to be higher than this. You do not get to have 62 per cent of the ball, hit the woodwork three times, miss four big chances, and walk away feeling hard done by. That is not how results work. Sunderland were the better team by several statistical measures. Zagreb were the better team when it actually mattered, and that is the only measure that counts in European competition.

The attitude in front of goal was poor. The delivery from wide areas was poor. And conceding twice inside the first 40 minutes at home is simply not acceptable for a team with European ambitions. If Sunderland want to compete at this level, they need to find the conviction to match their possession with goals. Right now, they do not have it. End of.
