St. Louis City 3, Sporting KC 2. Write it down. St. Louis were the better side for large parts of this match and they got their reward. But nobody watching this game was comfortable until the final whistle. That tells you something about the standards on both sides of the ball.
St. Louis were dominant from the off. They finished the match with 20 shots to Sporting KC's 12. They had 14 shots inside the box compared to Sporting KC's 7. They created four big chances to their opponents' one. The thing is, when you create that kind of volume at home, you need to kill the game. They did not do that. They went in 2-1 at half time after letting Sporting KC score with virtually their last meaningful act of the first half. That is unacceptable for any side that had been as dominant as St. Louis were.
The goals told the story of the first 45 minutes clearly enough. St. Louis scored in the 28th and 36th minutes, both right-foot finishes. They were in complete control. Then Sporting KC pulled one back in the 42nd minute. Just before the break. Going into the dressing room at 2-1 when you should be out of sight is a serious problem. That is poor game management. End of.
Both managers made changes at half time and Sporting KC came out with more intent. Whatever was said in their dressing room worked in the short term. They equalised in the 76th minute with a left-foot finish, and that goal came almost immediately after one of their substitutions. Credit where it is due. They competed harder in the second half and they made St. Louis uncomfortable.

Those are not small numbers. Sporting KC were physically in this game and were causing problems. The question was whether they could defend well enough at the other end to hold a draw. The answer, as it turned out, was no.

What was missing was the killer instinct to finish the job before the 76th minute.
The goalkeeper situation tells another story. Sporting KC's keeper was called upon to make only 2 saves all night despite facing 20 shots. That conversion rate from St. Louis is poor. You hit the woodwork once. You missed nine shots off target. When you are that dominant and that wasteful, you give a team like Sporting KC a route back into the game. They took it.

Both need serious attention.
St. Louis sit 7th in the table but their home form over the last five games is genuinely impressive. Four wins from five at home. Eleven goals scored. The momentum at their ground is real. Six wins from their last ten at home is a solid foundation. The problem remains their away record, two wins from their last ten on the road, but that is an argument for another day.
Tonight was about getting the job done at home against a side that refused to lie down. St. Louis did enough. The penalty was the decisive moment. Whether that penalty should have been awarded is for people with slower television and more time on their hands. What I can tell you is that St. Louis created more, threatened more, and deserved their three points. They just made it far harder than it needed to be.
