Last updated 19 August 2026. Seven days out from kick-off and the picture is getting clearer. Wednesday 26 August, 17:45 UK time. SK Rapid vs Hearts. UEFA Europa Conference League. And honestly... this one does not look great for the travelling support.
Rapid Vienna at home in European football. Under the lights. A crowd that knows how to make noise. And they are absolutely flying right now. Four games, four wins, fifteen goals scored, only four conceded. That is not a blip. That is a team in serious form. You look at that and you think... Hearts have got a job on their hands here, mate.
Look at the fixtures Rapid have played in this competition. Two home games, both won. Eight goals scored at home, only two against. They are clean sheeting half the time on their own patch. The Allianz Stadion is going to be rocking and Hearts are walking into that.
This is not me writing Hearts off. I like a proper football club, a proper set of fans, and Hearts are exactly that. But the data is the data and I have to be honest with you.
Seriously. Look at this. Overall in this competition across their last ten, Rapid have won every single game. Four from four. Fifteen goals for, four against. BTTS has happened in 75% of their matches. Over 2.5 goals in 75% of games. They are scoring for fun and they are only occasionally being punished at the back.
At home specifically, they are even tidier. Eight goals scored, two conceded across two home games. Clean sheet percentage of 50% on their own ground. So you are getting a team that can turn it on offensively but also knows how to shut up shop when they need to. That is a decent combination at any level. At Conference League level against a Scottish Premiership side... that is a problem for Hearts.
Now here is the interesting wrinkle. In the league standings from last season, Rapid finished 36th out of 36 with just one point from six games. Conceded fourteen. So this is a team that had a rough time of it at that stage of the competition previously. They have clearly responded. Something has clicked this season. I'm going big on this being a completely different Rapid side to the one that struggled last year. You heard it here first.
Right. This is where it gets uncomfortable if you are a Jambo.
In this competition away from home, Hearts have played once. Lost. One goal scored, six conceded. Six. That is a 1-6 defeat on their travels in Europe. Their overall Conference League record this campaign is one draw and one loss. Two goals for, seven against. Seven goals conceded in two games.
And look at their away stats from that game. Ten shots per game. Only two on target. Possession sitting at 33%. Two corners per game. They are being absolutely dominated in these European away fixtures. The opposition is getting at them and Hearts are barely laying a glove back.
Now, their domestic form at home in the Scottish Premiership tells a very different story. Five wins from five at home in the league, fifteen goals scored, only three conceded. So the quality is there. Hearts can absolutely play. But something changes when they go away in Europe and it is not pretty reading.
Their overall form across all competitions in the last five games is two wins, one draw, two losses. Mid-table vibes. Nothing that screams they are about to go to Vienna and boss it.
There is no head-to-head history between these two clubs in the data, so we are going in blind on that front. No previous meetings to lean on. Fresh ground for both sets of fans.
On the injury front, there is nothing flagged right now which is good for both teams. Seven days out, squads look fit. That could change between now and Wednesday of course, so keep an eye on the team news closer to kick-off. If anything significant drops, we will update this.
I actually looked at the numbers for once and there is one thing worth noting. Someone mentioned xG to me. You know me, I usually say "what even is that mate" and move on. But apparently Rapid's xG from their league campaign last season was 1.5 for and 2.1 against, which suggests they were overperforming even when they were losing. This season they have gone from bottom of the table to unbeaten. Whatever changed in the summer, it is working. Don't @ me for caring about xG. This is a one-off.
Right. Genuinely, everything points one way here.
Rapid are at home, in form, scoring goals for fun. Hearts are away in Europe, have been properly turned over in their one away European game this season, and are going to be up against a crowd and an atmosphere that will make life very difficult from minute one.
I reckon Rapid win this. Comfortably. Something like 3-1 or 2-0. Home win probability feels north of 60% to me. Hearts nicking a draw would be a genuine shock at this point. An away win would be scenes of the highest order.
The BTTS angle is tempting too. Hearts have scored in their Conference League games and Rapid concede at home occasionally. That 75% overall BTTS rate for Rapid is hard to ignore. Both teams to score feels like a reasonable shout even in a Rapid win. Over 2.5 goals at 75% frequency for Rapid overall makes the goals market worth a look as well.
I'm going big on this: Rapid to win and over 2.5 goals. Stick that in your acca and see what happens. Back to the drawing board if it goes wrong, as always.
Look, it is a midweek European game so I am keeping it simple. Rapid win. Goals in the game. Maybe a cheeky correct score punt on 3-1 if you are feeling brave. That is where I am landing. Trust the process, as I ironically say every single week before losing.
Wednesday 26 August. 17:45 UK. Vienna. This should be a fascinating watch even if you are not betting a penny. European football is European football and Hearts will want to prove everyone wrong. Including me. Go on then Jambos, prove me wrong.
Correct means the selection settled as won on the 90-minute result. Every selection counted here was recorded before kickoff. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
