A Point Each, And Neither Side Can Be Happy

Real Sociedad II and Tenerife played out a 1-1 draw in La Liga 2 on Saturday afternoon. Fabricio Assis put the hosts ahead in the 60th minute. The thing is, when you look at what both sides have been doing in recent matches, a draw is about the most honest result you could ask for. Real Sociedad II came in with one win from their last five in La Liga 2. Tenerife arrived with two wins from three. Neither team was going to blow the roof off. They did not.

The hosts have picked up one win, two draws and two losses in their last five La Liga 2 matches. They have conceded eight goals in that run. They have not kept a single clean sheet. That is not a blip. That is a pattern. And Saturday did nothing to break it.

Real Sociedad II managed just four shots across the entire match. One on target. That is not a performance that puts fear into anyone. They attempted 21 crosses and only five were accurate. The basics of how you create danger in this league, getting the ball into the box cleanly, were largely absent.

They did get the goal, to their credit. Fabricio Assis, who had come on as early as the eighth minute to replace Jesús Álvarez, finished with his right foot in the 60th minute to give Real Sociedad II the lead. The same Assis then picked up a yellow card in the 73rd minute for a foul. He was substituted off at the 77th minute, presumably to avoid any further disciplinary complications. When your impact substitute scores but also earns a booking and needs managing out of the game, it is a complicated evening.

Iván Chapela came on in the 66th minute and lasted ten minutes before collecting his own yellow card for a foul. Real Sociedad II finished the match with four yellow cards in total. That tells you something about their attitude to the game when things got tense. Discipline is a basic requirement. Four bookings means somebody is not competing within the rules.

Tenerife: Better on the Ball, Not Enough in Front of Goal

Tenerife had more of the ball, 56 per cent possession, and they used it more efficiently. Their pass accuracy came in at 86 per cent against Real Sociedad II's 78 per cent. They created seven key passes to the hosts' three. They hit the woodwork once. They had eight shots in total to Real Sociedad II's four.

And yet they were a goal down going into the final ten minutes. That is the accountability question for Tenerife's forwards. You have more of everything and you are still chasing the game. Tenerife had three shots blocked and four off target. They missed a big chance the data records. That is the difference between competing for three points and scrambling for one.

The equaliser did come. Javier Soroeta, who had been introduced as a substitute in the 71st minute, scored in the 81st with a right-foot finish, Jon Balda getting the assist. A goal four minutes after coming on. The manager made the change and it worked. That is the one decision on the Tenerife side that deserves credit. The substitution made the difference.

The VAR check that followed in the 82nd minute clearly found nothing wrong with Soroeta's goal, and the equaliser stood.

A Fractious Afternoon in the Basque Country

Six yellow cards across ninety minutes tells you the match was physical and often bad-tempered. Real Sociedad II picked up four of them. Tenerife had two, including one for Iñaki Rupérez just six minutes after he came on as a substitute in the 61st minute. Coming off the bench and getting booked inside ten minutes. That is not the kind of impact any manager wants from a fresh pair of legs.

Juanjo Sánchez of Real Sociedad II was booked for a foul in the 40th minute. Enric Gallego was carded for an argument in the 57th minute. There were moments throughout where the match threatened to boil over. It never quite did, but the referee was kept busy.

Both sides committed 14 fouls each. The duels won were level at 47 apiece. This was a contest fought in the trenches. The team that executed their moments better would take the result, and in the end, neither did enough to deserve all three points.

What Does This Mean Going Forward?

For Real Sociedad II, the concern is clear. Across their last ten La Liga 2 matches, they have won two, drawn four and lost four. They have conceded 15 goals and kept one clean sheet. That clean sheet percentage of ten per cent is simply not good enough for a side that wants to compete in this division. The defence is leaking. The attack is not prolific enough to cover for it.

For Tenerife, two wins from three matches in La Liga 2 heading into this fixture showed some momentum. A draw away from home is not a disaster. But they had the better of this match for long periods and left without the three points their possession and shot numbers might suggest they deserved. That big chance that went begging will stick in the mind.
