RB Leipzig 5-2 FC Augsburg: Leipzig Blow Augsburg Apart With Four First-Half Goals
SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·
Some matches tell their story early. This one told it in the first minute. Anton Kade put the ball in the net with a right-foot shot inside sixty seconds and RB Leipzig never looked back. By half-time it was 4-1. By full-time it was 5-2. FC Augsburg came to Leipzig and got exactly what their recent form deserved.
The Match Was Settled Before the Interval
Leipzig went ahead immediately through Kade in the first minute. Augsburg then did something curious. They got themselves level. David Raum picked up a yellow card for a foul in the 26th minute, which should have been a warning to his side about the standards required. Instead, Leipzig turned the screw.
Ezechiel Banzuzi pulled one back for Augsburg with a left-foot shot in the 33rd minute, assisted by Brajan Gruda. Fine. That happens. The thing is, Leipzig were not rattled. Christopher Nkunku restored the lead two minutes later, also from the left foot, also assisted by Gruda, which is a remarkable footnote. Same assister, two goals in two minutes, one for each side. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw picked up a yellow card for Augsburg right on 45 minutes. And then, in first-half stoppage time, David Raum of Leipzig scored directly from a free kick to make it 4-1. Leipzig went into half-time with the game killed.
Four goals before the break. Three of them in the space of twelve first-half minutes. That is not a tactical problem for Augsburg. That is an attitude problem. You do not concede like that to a team you are supposedly competing with. You just do not. End of.
Leipzig's Control Was Total
The numbers from this match are worth looking at because they back up what the eyes told you. Leipzig finished with 65 per cent possession. They completed 680 passes from 757 attempts, a 90 per cent accuracy rate. Augsburg managed 329 successful passes from 403. Leipzig had 148 attacks to Augsburg's 88. Dangerous attacks: 67 to 24. The ball simply did not belong to Augsburg for most of this afternoon.
Leipzig had 17 shots in total. Augsburg had 13, which sounds respectable on paper. But Augsburg missed three big chances and created five big chances overall without converting the ones that mattered most. Leipzig created three big chances and missed none of them. That is the difference between a team that knows how to win and a team that is just going through the motions.
Listen, Augsburg had eight shots on target. That is not a team being completely outplayed in terms of getting the ball into dangerous positions. But their goalkeeper made only two saves. Work that out yourself.
The Second Half Wrapped It Up
Augsburg made a change at the break, bringing on Alexis Claude-Maurice for Arijon Ibrahimovic. It made no difference to the shape of the match. Leipzig continued to control possession and the second goal came through Romulo in the 60th minute, assisted by Nkunku. Leipzig then made three substitutions on 65 minutes, bringing on Christoph Baumgartner, Benjamin Henrichs, and Antonio Nusa. Baumgartner scored within sixty seconds of coming on, in the 66th minute, with Nusa as the assistant. That is a substitute making an instant impact. That is depth. That is a squad with standards.
Robin Fellhauer of Augsburg picked up a yellow card for a foul in the 72nd minute. Augsburg were chasing shadows and getting frustrated. Their only moment of late consolation came in the 90th minute when substitute Uchenna Ogundu, who had come on in the 73rd minute, pulled a goal back for Augsburg with a left-foot shot assisted by Fabian Rieder. Too little. Far too late.
Augsburg's Form Made This Inevitable
It would be generous to say Augsburg arrived here in poor form. In their last five completed Bundesliga matches they had won none, drawn two, and lost three. They had conceded 12 goals in that sample and kept zero clean sheets. Every single one of those five matches had seen both sides score. They were a team leaking goals every week before they even got on the bus to Leipzig.
The head-to-head record between these two sides was equally grim reading for Augsburg. In two previous Bundesliga meetings, Leipzig had won both. Leipzig had scored eight goals across those two matches. Augsburg had scored one. The numbers pointed in one direction before kick-off. The match confirmed what the numbers said.
Leipzig's Injury List Makes This More Impressive
Leipzig went into this match carrying significant injury and suspension problems. The data shows two major injuries, four moderate injuries, one minor injury, and two players suspended. One of those suspensions does not expire until January 2027. That is a depleted squad by any measure. And yet Leipzig put five past a Bundesliga side with a performance that was, for large parts, completely controlled.
The thing is, that is what standards look like. You deal with what you have. You do not use the treatment room as an excuse. Leipzig's players who were fit and available went out and competed. They were clinical when it mattered. They were disciplined in possession with a 90 per cent pass accuracy rate. They managed the game after going four up before half-time. That is a team with accountability built into how they play.
The Basics Decide Matches Like This
Augsburg's issues were not complicated. They came to a ground where Leipzig had won both previous Bundesliga meetings. They were without a win in their last five Bundesliga matches. They conceded in the first minute. They were 4-1 down at half-time. They missed three big chances when the game was already gone. Their goalkeeper made two saves all afternoon.
No amount of tactical adjustment covers up a lack of desire to compete for 90 minutes. Augsburg had the shots. They had the chances. The basics of converting your opportunities, defending when you are in the game, and showing up when the opposition score early: they failed on all of them. Leipzig did not need to be brilliant. They just needed to be better. And they were. 5-2. End of.
