PSG 2-0 Lyon: Mayulu and Godts Punish Toothless Visitors in Second Half

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Paris Saint Germain 2-0 Lyon. Write it down. Two second-half goals. A clean sheet. Job done. That is what winning at home looks like and PSG delivered it on Monday evening.

The Basics Were There From the Start

Listen, when you win 68 percent of the ball and register 153 attacks to your opponent's 33, you are doing the basics right. PSG controlled this match from the opening whistle. Lyon came here to survive. That is not a compliment.

The thing is, Lyon's approach was fine for about an hour. They sat deep, they fouled when they had to, and they kept it level. Ernest Nuamah picked up a yellow card in the 74th minute for an argument, which tells you the mood inside the Lyon camp by that stage. They were hanging on and they knew it.

A Quiet First Half That PSG Needed to Manage Better

Vitinha was booked in the 31st minute for a foul. Maghnes Akliouche followed him into the referee's book in the 51st minute. Two yellows in the first hour is sloppy. That is a lack of discipline and PSG's manager would have been well aware of it.

The home side had the territory and the ball but they lacked the cutting edge to break Lyon down before the break. Seventeen shots in total for the match, ten on target. The Lyon goalkeeper made seven saves. That tells you Lyon's goalkeeper worked hard and kept his side in it longer than they deserved.

PSG attempted 757 passes with a 94 percent accuracy rate. Lyon managed 348 with 86 percent accuracy. That is not a contest in possession terms. But possession without goals is just keeping the ball warm. PSG needed to convert that dominance into something real.

The Substitutes Who Changed Everything

Here is where it gets interesting. PSG made their move in the 57th minute when Mika Godts replaced João Neves. Then in the 65th minute, Warren Zaïre-Emery came off for Lucas Hernández and Ferran Torres was replaced by Senny Mayulu.

Those changes mattered. Directly.

Senny Mayulu scored in the 72nd minute with a right foot shot, assisted by Mika Godts. The substitute set up the other substitute. Then in the 84th minute, Mika Godts scored himself with a right foot shot, assisted by Quentin Ndjantou, who had come on in the 81st minute to replace the booked Akliouche.

The thing is, those are not lucky goals from lucky substitutes. That is a manager making the right calls at the right time and players coming off the bench with desire and purpose. End of.

Lyon Had Nothing Going Forward

Listen, five shots on target and five goal attempts in total from Lyon. That is not a team that threatened a result. Their dangerous attack count was 19 compared to PSG's 58. PSG won 42 duels to Lyon's 30. PSG made ten interceptions to Lyon's seven.

Lyon committed 14 fouls. They were physical because they had no other answer. When you cannot compete with the ball, you compete without it. The problem is that PSG's quality eventually found a way through regardless.

Lyon did have seven goal kicks, which shows how deep they were defending for long periods. Their goalkeeper was their best player on the night. Seven saves is a solid individual performance. The rest of the Lyon side offered almost nothing going the other way.

A Clean Sheet PSG Deserved

PSG's goalkeeper made five saves, which means Lyon did test them on occasion. This was not a completely comfortable evening for the home defence. But when you win 2-0 and keep a clean sheet, you cannot argue with the result.

In five Ligue 1 matches before this one, PSG had won four and lost one, scoring ten goals and conceding five. Their clean sheet percentage in that sample was just 20 percent. So keeping Lyon out here matters. The standards at the back have to match the standards going forward.

Lyon came in with three wins, one draw and one loss from their five prior Ligue 1 matches in the same window. They had scored ten goals and conceded four in those five games. They arrived with form. They left with nothing.

Accountability and Standards

PSG had five players listed as out injured going into this match. Five. That is a significant absentee list. And yet they still put in a performance that was controlled, dominant and ultimately clinical in the second half. No excuses needed. Results are what matter.

The one concern is the discipline. Two yellow cards from Vitinha and Akliouche, with Akliouche eventually taken off partly as a result. You cannot keep gifting referees those decisions. In a tighter match, against a better side, that sloppiness gets punished.

But on this occasion, PSG had the attitude and the standards when it counted. Mayulu and Godts came on and made an immediate difference. That is what squads are for. That is what accountability looks like. You come on, you compete, you score.

The Verdict

PSG win 2-0. Clean sheet. Second-half goals from substitutes Senny Mayulu and Mika Godts settled it. Lyon offered very little, did not deserve anything, and went home empty-handed.

The only head-to-head meeting between these two sides on record before this fixture saw Lyon win 2-1. PSG have answered that. Two goals, none conceded. That is how you respond.

If PSG keep that level of control and keep getting contributions from their substitutes, they are going to be very difficult to handle. Lyon were never really in this one. PSG made sure of it.
