Hofmann Double Seals Leverkusen's 2-0 Win Over OFI in Europa League

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Bayer Leverkusen went to Crete and did exactly what a side of their quality should do. They were clinical, they were controlled, and they left with three points. The scoreline was 2-0. The margin of superiority was considerably larger than that.

Hofmann Does the Damage Early

The game was settled in a devastating three-minute spell midway through the first half. Jonas Hofmann struck in the 35th minute with a right-foot shot, then did it again in the 38th minute, this time with Malik Tillman providing the assist. Two goals. Three minutes. Match over. That is what ruthlessness looks like.

OFI's goalkeeper was kept busy all evening. Twelve saves from the home goalkeeper tells its own story. Leverkusen had 15 shots on target from 33 total attempts. They created four big chances. They missed three of them. On another night, this could have been considerably more embarrassing for the home side.

OFI Had No Answer

The thing is, OFI were not completely passive. They won 34 duels to Leverkusen's 24. They made 12 interceptions. They competed in the physical battles. But competing in individual moments and competing as a team capable of threatening a side like Leverkusen are two entirely different things.

OFI managed six shots in total. Only two were on target. They created zero big chances. Not one. The goalkeeper at the other end made two saves all evening. That tells you everything about where the danger was concentrated in this match.

Leverkusen had 63 per cent of the ball and completed 626 successful passes at a 92 per cent accuracy rate. OFI had 37 per cent possession and 398 passes at 83 per cent. Listen, those numbers are not catastrophic for a side defending against one of Europe's better equipped squads. But it reflects a team that was on the back foot from the moment Hofmann scored and never found a way back.

Discipline Was a Problem for Leverkusen

This is where Leverkusen have questions to answer themselves. Three yellow cards in a single match is sloppy. Carles Martínez picked one up in the 15th minute for an argument. Aleix García followed with a booking for a foul in the 25th minute. Jarell Quansah was carded in the 79th minute. Equi Fernández got one in the 86th. That is four bookings for the away side in total, and that level of indiscipline is unacceptable regardless of the result.

When you are winning 2-0, you do not need to be giving away cards. You do not need to be getting wound up. You manage the game. Leverkusen's superiority on the pitch was clear. Their composure off the ball was not always at the same standard.

OFI's Borja González, introduced from the bench in the 83rd minute, also picked up a booking in the 87th. A minute on the pitch and straight into the referee's notebook. That tells you the tempo and mood of the match by the final stages.

Rotation and Depth on Display

Leverkusen made five substitutions, rotating through their squad with the game comfortably in hand. Hofmann, who scored both goals and was rightly withdrawn as a precaution after his efforts, made way for Ibrahim Maza in the 64th minute. Malik Tillman came off at the same time, replaced by Moussa Diaby. Miguel Gutiérrez came on for Facundo Medina and Nathan Tella replaced Patrik Schick. Edmond Tapsoba also came on in the 74th minute.

Leverkusen had six players absent through injury or suspension coming into this match. Despite that, they were never troubled. That speaks to the depth of the squad. It does not excuse the bookings. Standards are standards regardless of who you are putting on the pitch.

Europa League Form Backing Up the Result

Leverkusen arrived in this competition having won both of their two completed Europa League matches. They beat Celje 2-0 and then dismantled Lech Poznan 4-0. They have conceded zero goals across those two matches. Add this result and the defensive record remains intact. Six goals scored. None conceded. That is the kind of consistency that wins competitions.

OFI had shown some encouraging form in four completed Europa League matches coming into this fixture. They recorded three wins and one loss, conceding just twice in total and keeping clean sheets in three of those games. Their only defeat in that sample came last week, when OFI lost 1-2 to Rennes. Before that they had beaten 1899 Hoffenheim 2-0 and CSKA Sofia twice without conceding. There was form here to respect. Leverkusen simply did not care about any of it.

The Bottom Line

Leverkusen were better in every attacking department that matters. More shots, more shots on target, more big chances, more key passes, more accurate crossing. OFI competed where they could. They won more duels. They made more interceptions. They kept their heads up and kept trying. The basics of defending were not their problem. The basics of threatening a top European side were.

Hofmann was outstanding. Scoring twice in three minutes at that level requires composure and quality. He deserved to be taken off to a round of applause. He got the job done. Leverkusen did what was required of them in this competition and left Crete with three points. That is all that matters. End of.
