Right, here we go. Carabao Cup first round football. The competition that everyone says they don't care about until their club goes out and then suddenly everyone cares very much. Leyton Orient host Oxford United and honestly, on paper, this is as open as it gets. Two sides who have been anything but convincing recently, chucked together in a cup tie where rotation will almost certainly play a part. Buckle up.
Look, I'll be straight with you. Neither of these teams is exactly ripping it up right now. Orient have gone DLLDL in their last five overall, and at home it is actually worse... DLDLL. Zero wins in their last five at Brisbane Road. Zero. They have shipped eight goals at home in those five games and scored just four. That is not a defence that is going to put the fear of God into anyone.
The xG stuff, and yes I am going to mention it, mostly because Marcus would never let me hear the end of it if I didn't... the numbers say Orient are generating about as much as they are conceding. Which sounds balanced until you notice they are losing games. Classic case of the numbers lying to you with a straight face. Or, as Marcus would say, "the model is directionally accurate." Yeah cheers mate.
Oxford are not setting the world alight either. Last five overall: LWLLW. Two wins, three losses, no draws. Boom or bust. Their away form specifically is the bit that jumps out though. Last five on the road: LLDLW. One win, one draw, three losses. Eight goals conceded away from home in five games. Clean sheet percentage on the road? Zero. Nil. Absolute naff all.
So what we actually have here is a shaky home side who cannot keep it tight at the back, hosting a visiting side who cannot keep it tight on the road. You already know what I am thinking about for the bet, don't you...
The market is genuinely tight on this one. Orient are the home favourites but only just. Best price on the Orient win is 2.80 with Coral. Oxford are available at around 2.23 to 2.45 depending on your bookmaker. The draw sits around 3.10 to 3.45 across the board.
Now here is the interesting bit. Our model gives Orient a 42.4% chance of winning, which against a market implied probability of around 35.7% represents a genuine edge of about 6.7%. That is actually decent. That is the kind of number that at least makes you think rather than just blindly following. I am not saying pile your mortgage on it. I am saying it is worth a look.
The totals market is almost perfectly split. Under 2.5 is sitting at 1.95 with Casumo. Over 2.5 is 1.77 to 1.85 depending where you shop. The model calls it 51% Under, which is basically a coin flip. When the model shrugs, I usually trust my eyes instead. And my eyes say these two defences are a mess.
Honestly, cup football in the first round is weird. Both managers will rotate. Both squads will have players desperate to prove a point. That combination often produces scrappy, open games with goals in them rather than cagey nil-nils.
Orient's home BTTS rate in their last five is 60%. Oxford's away BTTS rate is 40%. Blended together that is a reasonable base for goals at both ends. Orient have scored in three of their last five at home. Oxford have conceded in every single away game in their last five. Every one.
And look at the fixtures. This is the start of the season. Neither side has properly settled yet. Orient are winless at home. Oxford are leaky everywhere they go. Add in cup rotation and you have got a game where the backline might include a couple of lads who have barely trained together. Goals feel more likely than not to me.
The model is not wild about BTTS at these odds, flagging a negative edge at 1.75. Fair enough. But the Under 2.5 at effectively 50/50 odds does not excite me either. There is no real value there, it is just a guess.
I'm going big on this... well, not big. This is Carabao Cup first round, let's keep some perspective. But I am landing on Orient to win and BTTS as my double for this one. Orient at 2.80 is the best price on the home side and the model backs it up with genuine edge. Stick BTTS alongside it and you are looking at a combined price of around 4.90 to 5.00 depending where you build it.
Orient win and both teams score. That means Orient nick it 2-1 or 3-2 style. Given what both defences have been doing lately, that feels entirely plausible. You heard it here first. Don't @ me if Oxford win 1-0 and the model was right all along.
Back to the drawing board... just kidding, we haven't lost yet. Ask me again on Sunday morning.
