Levski Sofia. Champions League. A goal in the eighth minute. Then eighty-two minutes of hanging on and doing it properly. That is the story. And the thing is, it is a good one.
Levski scored in the eighth minute through a field goal and that was enough. One chance, one goal, job done. That is what accountability looks like in big European nights. You get an opportunity at this level, you take it. Sofia took it.
Craiova had 57 per cent possession. They had 134 attacks and 70 of those were classed as dangerous. They had 15 free kicks to Sofia's seven. On paper, they were the dominant side. On the scoreboard, they were beaten. That is the only number that matters. End of.
Let me tell you what I saw from Craiova. I saw a team with the ball and nothing to show for it. Thirteen shots off target. One shot on target across the entire ninety minutes. One. Their goalkeeper made four saves at the other end. The Craiova keeper made one.
You cannot come to a Champions League qualifier, dominate possession, generate that volume of attacking play, and then produce one shot on target. That is not bad luck. That is a lack of desire in the final third. It is a lack of composure. It is a failure of the basics.
Listen, I don't need a spreadsheet to tell me that a team with nine total shots and only one on target has a problem with conviction. You can see it. Their players were getting into good areas and then making the wrong decision or mishitting the ball entirely. Thirteen shots off target. Thirteen. At some point that stops being a statistic and starts being a statement about the attitude of a forward line.
The thing is, Levski were not passive. They had eight shots of their own. They had four on target. Their goalkeeper only needed to make one save all match. One. That tells you everything about how well they managed the game after going ahead.
Their ball safe count was 99 compared to Craiova's 95. They conceded more fouls, yes, picking up three yellow cards to Craiova's two, and that is a side note worth watching in the second leg. But the defensive structure held. When Craiova pumped balls forward, Sofia dealt with them. When the pressure came late with those substitutions at 75 and 80 minutes, Sofia responded with their own changes to manage the game.
That is game management. That is knowing what the job is and doing it. Standards.
Four bookings across the match, split fairly evenly. Craiova picked up cards in the 34th and 41st minutes, which suggests there was frustration building early when they could not get through. Sofia's card in the 41st minute came right alongside Craiova's second, so there was clearly a flash point in that spell before half time.
Sofia also picked up cards in the 50th and 90th minutes. The late one is worth noting. When a team is defending a lead deep into stoppage time and collecting fouls, sometimes that is professional defending and sometimes it is losing control. One card at the death does not alarm me. What matters is the scoreline stayed intact.
Sofia's home record coming into this was remarkable. Two wins from two at home this season, five goals scored, none conceded. A 100 per cent clean sheet rate on their own ground. That is not an accident. There is something about this Levski side at home that opposing teams simply have not been able to crack.
Craiova's away form told a different story. They came in with one win and one loss from their two away games, conceding twice in those matches. No clean sheet away from home. They had the ball tonight but they could not break down a side that knows how to protect their own ground. That is a basic truth about football that no amount of possession can override.
Craiova will have to come out and attack at home now. A one-goal deficit in a Champions League tie is not insurmountable but it requires a completely different performance to what they showed here. They need someone in that forward line to find some composure. They need shots that actually trouble the keeper. Thirteen off target is not a platform to build a comeback from. It is an indictment.
For Sofia, the job is simple. Compete. Defend their shape. Score on the break if the opportunity comes. They have shown they can keep a clean sheet. They have shown they can score early and manage a game. The desire is there. The standards are there.
The thing is, nobody gave Levski Sofia much of a chance coming into this tie. And here they are, 1-0 up in a UEFA Champions League qualifier, having conceded one shot on target all night against a side that supposedly had the technical quality to dictate the game.
Football does not care about technical quality if you cannot put the ball on target. Levski Sofia cared about the result. Craiova cared about the ball. We know which one matters. End of.
