Marseille Win 2-1 at Lens But Lens Make Them Sweat in a Feisty Ligue 1 Encounter

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Marseille came to Bollaert-Delelis and did what a side in form does. They competed. They were organised. They punished Lens for the basics they got wrong. The result was a 2-1 win, and while Lens made it nervy late on, Marseille deserved it. End of.

How the Goals Went In

Amine Gouiri opened the scoring for Lens after just two minutes with a right-foot shot. Two minutes. Before most people had their coats off. Credit where it is due, Lens came flying out of the blocks and they put Marseille under pressure early.

The thing is, Marseille did not panic. They absorbed it and hit back. On 20 minutes, Florian Thauvin headed home with an assist from Florian Sotoca. A header. The basics. Get the ball into the box, have a runner arrive at the right moment, put it in the net. Marseille levelled and from that point they were the better side.

It stayed 1-1 for a long time and Lens had their chances. Four big chances missed across the full match. Four. That is unacceptable at any level. You earn those opportunities and you have to take them. Marseille created five big chances and missed one. That difference in clinical thinking tells you a lot about the mentality gap between the two sides on this particular night.

The winner came on 82 minutes. Keyliane Abdallah, introduced as a substitute at 78 minutes, scored with a right-foot shot. A substitute scoring the winner. That tells you about the attitude in the Marseille squad. Players coming off the bench and immediately wanting to make a difference. That is standards.

Marseille Controlled What Mattered

Look at the numbers. Marseille had 59 per cent of the ball. They made 644 passes to Lens's 446 and completed them at 86 per cent accuracy against Lens's 78 per cent. They won 49 duels to Lens's 31. They made 15 tackles to Lens's 10.

The thing is, those are not fancy figures. Those are basics. Wanting the ball more. Fighting for second balls. Keeping it when you have it. Marseille did all of that better than Lens across 90 minutes.

Marseille also carried a threat from wide areas. Four accurate crosses landed. Seven successful dribbles completed at a 70 per cent success rate, compared to Lens managing just two successful dribbles from ten attempts. Listen, when you are losing a dribble seven times out of ten, your attackers are not competing hard enough with the ball at their feet.

Lens Had Enough to Win This Match and Did Not

This is what frustrates me. Lens had 59 per cent more attacks than Marseille over the course of the match, with 118 attacks to 92. They had more shots in total with 16 to 13. They hit the woodwork once. They had more possession in dangerous areas at points in this game.

And they lost. Because desire without execution is just effort that goes nowhere. You have to put the ball in the net. You have to take your big chances. Lens missed four of them. That is not bad luck. That is a lack of accountability in the moments that matter most.

Lens's recent Ligue 1 form coming into this match showed wins over Paris FC, Troyes, and Lyon, so this was not a side without confidence. But Lens had also lost their most recent Ligue 1 match before this one, going down 1-0 to Lille. The softness that crept into that performance was visible again here when the decisive moments arrived.

Discipline and Decisions Under Pressure

Marseille's Yassine Titraoui picked up a yellow card on 79 minutes for a foul. Lens's Amine Gouiri was carded on 81 minutes for arguing. Then Abdallah scored the winner on 82. So in the space of three minutes, Gouiri was arguing with officials instead of concentrating on defending, and the next thing that happened was Marseille scored the winner. That sequence is not a coincidence. You switch off, you get punished. It is the game.

Jeffrey de Lange then received a yellow card for time wasting deep in added time. Lens down 2-1, burning time instead of throwing everything forward. That is an attitude problem. You are at home. You compete until the whistle.

Marseille's Form Justified the Win

Marseille came into this Ligue 1 fixture with four wins from their previous five Ligue 1 matches, scoring 14 goals in that sample. Four wins and fourteen goals. The only blemish was a 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Everything else pointed to a side playing with real conviction.

They kept a clean sheet in two of those five matches. They scored five against Angers and four against Le Havre. This is a side that can hurt you in multiple ways and from multiple positions. Thauvin scoring with his head from a cross is exactly the kind of variation that makes a team hard to defend against.

Marseille's goalkeeper made five saves in this match. Lens had six shots on target. So it was not a stroll for Marseille. They had to work for it. But the goalkeeper was equal to what Lens produced and that is what a clean defensive unit does. It holds when it needs to hold.

What Lens Need to Fix

Zero clean sheets in their previous five Ligue 1 matches coming into this game. None. Every single opponent found a way through. You cannot build anything consistent without keeping clean sheets. That is the foundation. And with 80 per cent of those five matches seeing both teams score, Lens have a defensive problem that is not going away on its own.

The attitude of the squad needs examining too. Fifteen fouls committed in this match. Arguments with officials while the game is live. Time wasting when they needed a goal. These are not tactical problems. These are standards problems. Someone needs to address them directly and without excuses.

Marseille were better on the night and they took the points. Lens had the moments to change the result and wasted them. That is on the players. It is a results business and Marseille understood that better than Lens did tonight.
