Right, so. Leicester vs Northampton Town in the Carabao Cup. On paper this is the most straightforward preview I will write all season. In practice... Leicester's home record right now is the stuff of nightmares and I am not just going to wave that away. Let's get into it.
This is a Carabao Cup first round tie. August 8th, 2pm kick-off at the King Power. One Premier League or Championship side against a League One club. Simple enough. Except nothing about Leicester's home form this season is simple.
Look, Northampton have lost their last ten games in a row. Ten. Not five, not seven. Ten consecutive defeats. They have conceded 26 goals in those ten games and scored eight. Their momentum slope is literally listed as zero in the data. Zero! Not going up, not going down. Just... existing. Surviving. Turning up. Fair play to them for that, actually.
But here is the thing. Leicester at home this season? Zero wins in their last five home games. WDDLL overall but strip out the away form and at home it reads DDLDL. They have kept zero clean sheets at home in the last five. Zero. They are conceding for fun in their own stadium. So yes, Leicester should win this. Comfortably. But do not expect a quiet afternoon.
Honestly, I looked at the numbers for once and they genuinely surprised me. Leicester are putting up 28 shots per game at home and 10 on target. That is a lot of attacking intent. They have 59 percent possession at home on average. So they are not being dominated. They are just... not winning.
Now here is where it gets funny. The xG numbers, and I know, I know, bear with me because even I cannot ignore this one, show Leicester generating 2.01 expected goals at home while conceding just 0.41. So the model reckons they should be smashing teams at the King Power and barely letting anyone in. Instead they are drawing and losing. Make it make sense. That is either terrible finishing, terrible luck, or something is genuinely wrong in how they see out games. Probably a bit of all three.
The BTTS rate at home sits at 80 percent across the last five. Both teams are scoring in four out of five home games for Leicester. That is relevant when we get to the bets.
Look, I do not want to be harsh on Northampton. They are a League One club in the Carabao Cup against a team two or three divisions above them. This is exactly what the cup is for. But the data is brutal.
Ten losses on the spin. Conceding an average of 2.6 goals per game. Their possession average across recent games is listed at 9.5 percent in one context and 7 percent in another. Seven percent possession at home. That is not a football team, that is a team surviving a mugging for 90 minutes every single week.
Away from home specifically, Northampton have lost all five of their last five, conceding 13 and scoring three. Their BTTS rate away is 60 percent which is the one stat that could be relevant later. They do tend to nick a goal even when getting beaten.
There is one long-term injury in the camp listed as out with no expected return date. No name attached in the data but a long-term absence is never helpful when you are already in freefall.
Leicester are priced at 1.30 to win. Northampton are out at 7.00. The draw is 5.25. Draw No Bet on Leicester is 1.11 which tells you everything about how the market views this.
The handicap lines are interesting. Bet365 have Leicester at -2.5 goals priced at 3.10, meaning they think a two-goal Leicester win is more likely than not to be the minimum. That is a big ask given Leicester's home form but given Northampton's away form... maybe not actually.
Over 2.5 goals is priced at 1.53. Under 2.5 at 2.40. Given both teams have been leaking goals and the Foxes' home BTTS rate is 80 percent, the over looks tempting.
Three signals have come through on this one. First up, Northampton to win at 9.00 with a model probability of 20.8 percent against an implied 11.1 percent. There is an edge there on paper. Confidence is only 25 though. I'm not taking that one. Northampton have won zero of their last ten. Zero. Even with the value, I'm leaving it.
BTTS Yes is priced at 1.90 with the model giving it 51.3 percent probability. The market implies 52.6 percent. Basically a coin flip and the model gives it almost exactly the same chance as the market does. The signal shows a tiny negative edge of minus 1.3 percent. Honestly the data does support BTTS here, Leicester cannot keep clean sheets at home and Northampton nick goals here and there, but the model is not screaming value at these odds.
Under 2.5 goals at 2.40 is the most interesting signal. Model gives it 46.7 percent, market implies 41.7 percent. A five percent edge and a slightly higher confidence than the others at 47. I reckon this one deserves a closer look.
Right. I'm going big on this. My read is Leicester win but this is not a comfortable, boring 3-0 cup walkover. Leicester's home record says pain, Northampton's away record says they concede plenty but grab a goal now and then.
For a cheeky correct score punt? Leicester 3-1 is listed at 17.00. Feels right given the themes here. Both teams have been shipping goals, Leicester should have enough to win clearly, Northampton should grab one consolation. Seventeen quid for a quid? Absolutely bunging that in the Saturday Special.
For a more sensible stand-alone bet, I actually like Leicester to win and under 3.5 goals combined. Leicester might just edge this 2-0 or 2-1 without the fireworks. The handicap market showing Leicester -1.5 at 1.90 is also fair value if you believe in the Foxes doing enough without setting the world alight.
Don't @ me if it ends 5-3. You heard it here first that this one might be more chaotic than the odds suggest.
Prediction: Leicester 2-1 Northampton Town
