Right, let's not dress this up. Larne 0-4 Crvena Zvezda. Finished. Done. And honestly, looking at those stats, you could argue the scoreline was flattering to the home side.
I'll be straight with you. I love a good underdog story in the Champions League qualifiers. A part-time club or a small-nation champion rocking up against one of Europe's heavyweights and giving it a proper go. Sometimes you get that. Sometimes you get this. And this... this was a hiding.
Let's start with the shots. Crvena Zvezda had 25 shots in total. Twenty-five. Larne had one. One single shot in the entire match, and it was off target. Their goalkeeper made nine saves and Larne's keeper made none, because Crvena Zvezda's keeper had literally nothing to do all evening.
Look at the corners. Eight to nil. Possession, sixty-nine to thirty-one. Dangerous attacks, eighty-two to twenty-three. I'm not usually one to sit here rattling off numbers like some sort of robot. You know me, I'll normally say something like "oh here comes the xG chat" and roll my eyes so hard I can see the back of my own head. But you don't even need any of that fancy stuff here. The raw numbers tell you everything. Larne were absolutely swamped.
Crvena Zvezda had fifteen shots on target. Fifteen. And they scored four. Larne's goalkeeper had one of those nights where you almost feel sorry for the lad. Nine saves and he still ends up with four past him. He kept it from being truly embarrassing, to be fair.
The first half was spiky. Crvena Zvezda were dominant but the scoreline stayed level going into the break, which is actually the kind of thing that gives you a tiny bit of hope if you're a Larne fan. They were hanging on, yes. But they were still in it.
Then the cards started flying. A Crvena Zvezda player picked up a yellow on twenty minutes for a foul. Then came a penalty for Crvena Zvezda on twenty-six minutes, which felt like it could be the moment that settled things. And then Larne picked up two bookings themselves in quick succession, on twenty-eight and thirty-four minutes. So before half-time you've already got three yellows and a penalty situation. Feisty stuff.
Now here's the interesting bit. The penalty on twenty-six minutes is registered as an event but Crvena Zvezda didn't score before half-time. So either the penalty was missed, saved, or the data is recording it as awarded rather than converted. Whatever happened, it stayed nil-nil at the break. Both managers made changes at half-time, one sub each, trying to find something different.
And then Crvena Zvezda just turned it on in the second half. Absolutely turned it on.
Fifty-five minutes, one-nil. A field goal, nothing fancy, just relentless pressure eventually finding a way through. Sixty-seven minutes, two-nil. Larne were making subs by this point, chasing something, anything. Seventy-three minutes and Crvena Zvezda made three substitutions at once. Three. That tells you they were managing the game, rotating the squad, not panicking. They were totally in control.
Eighty-five minutes, three-nil, and then... look, I don't have the final goal's exact minute logged separately but the scoreline ended four-nil so there was a fourth in there somewhere. The floodgates opened late and Larne had nothing left to give.
Listen, you have to give Larne credit for being here at all. Getting to the Champions League qualifiers as an Irish League club is a genuine achievement. The Premiership in Northern Ireland is a tough, competitive league and Larne have been one of the dominant forces in it. That matters.
But the gap in quality at this level is enormous. Look at the form going into this. In their last ten games in this competition's context, Larne had conceded five goals in just three home matches and their momentum slope was sitting at minus three. Minus three. That's a number that basically tells you things are trending in the wrong direction, and tonight confirmed it in the most brutal way possible.
Their home form coming into this showed they'd already shipped five goals in their last two home games in this league context. So this wasn't completely out of nowhere. There were signs Larne's defence was vulnerable.
Honestly, I'm going big on this. Crvena Zvezda look like a proper machine right now. Coming into this they had a perfect record in this competition's away context, one game, four goals scored, none conceded. And they've just backed that up with... one game, four goals scored, none conceded. Exact same record.
The control they showed was remarkable. Sixty-nine per cent possession. Eighty-two dangerous attacks compared to twenty-three. They had the ball, they moved it, they pressed, they created chance after chance. And when they needed to see the game out they made five substitutions in total and managed proceedings like a team that knew exactly what they were doing.
This is a club that knows how to handle the Champions League. They've been here before. You could see it in every decision they made, every rotation at seventy-three minutes, every moment of calm when Larne tried to get themselves into it in the first half.
Mate, this was scenes, but not the fun kind. Not the limbs and madness kind. This was a cold, clinical, professional dismantling of a side that simply isn't at this level yet. No shame in that for Larne, honestly. The Champions League qualifiers are brutal like that.
Crvena Zvezda looked every inch a team that belongs in this tournament. You heard it here first, they'll cause problems for whoever comes next. Don't @ me.
Back to the drawing board for Larne. But also, genuinely, well done for getting here. Just maybe don't look at those shot stats again for a while. One shot. One.
