Jablonec 1-0 Rangers: Chanturishvili Punishes Toothless Scots in Extra Time

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Rangers came to Jablonec having won the first leg 1-0. They left with nothing. Jablonec won this second leg 1-0 and sent the tie into extra time. The Scots had the result they needed sitting right in front of them for 120 minutes and could not grab it. That is not bad luck. That is a lack of execution. End of.

The Basics Were Not Done

Look at the shot numbers. Jablonec had 16 total shots to Rangers' nine. Jablonec had five shots on target. Rangers had one. One shot on target in a knockout tie they needed at minimum to draw. That is unacceptable. It tells you everything about the attitude going forward.

The thing is, Rangers had the ball. They controlled 46% possession, which is not dominant, but they were compact and organised in spells. Fourteen key passes from Jablonec compared to seven from Rangers. The home side were simply more dangerous, more direct, and more willing to compete for the result they needed.

The Goal That Decided It

Vakhtang Chanturishvili put Jablonec ahead in the 73rd minute with a right-foot shot. That was the only goal of the match and it was enough. Rangers had thrown on Lawrence Shankland, Connor Barron, and Findlay Curtis all at half-time. Three changes at the break tells you the manager knew something was not right. What happened after those changes? Rangers mustered one shot on target across the entire match. The substitutions did not solve the problem.

Thelo Aasgaard came on at 60 minutes. Kosta Nedeljkovic at 79. Bojan Miovski arrived at 106 minutes, deep into extra time, when the tie was already slipping away. That is when you bring on your striker. When there are fourteen minutes left. Listen, if Miovski needed to be on the pitch to score goals, he should have been on the pitch when goals were needed.

Rangers Could Not Compete in the Final Third

Rangers had 54% of the ball in possession. Their pass completion sat at 85%. They were tidy. They were safe. They were not competitive enough where it mattered. Jablonec had 77 dangerous attacks to Rangers' 60. The home side had 11 shots inside the box. Rangers had six. You do not win football matches by being tidy in your own half.

The Rangers goalkeeper made four saves. Jablonec's keeper made one. That is the story of the match in two numbers. One side was under pressure. The other was not. Standards demand more from a side that came here with a lead to protect and a simple job to do.

Jablonec Deserved It

To be fair to Jablonec, they were the better side and they showed desire. Their form coming into this tie in this competition showed three wins from five matches, including a 2-1 win over Rīgas FS and a 2-0 win over Varaždin. They lost the first leg against Rangers 0-1 away from home and came back, reorganised, and competed properly. That is accountability in action. You go away, you lose, you come home and you put it right.

Chanturishvili's goal was not fortunate. Jablonec had 14 key passes, double what Rangers produced. They created the big chance and they took it. Their goalkeeper barely had to work. That is a disciplined defensive performance and an effective attacking one. The basics, done correctly, got the result.

Martin Cedidla and the Discipline Question

Jablonec's Martin Cedidla picked up a yellow card in the 17th minute for a foul. Rangers' Lawrence Shankland, the striker brought on at half-time to help Rangers find a goal, received a yellow card in the 112th minute for an argument. That tells you about the frustration levels inside the Rangers camp. Shankland came on to score. He ended up booked for arguing. That sums up the night.

Jablonec finished with two yellow cards across the match. Rangers collected one. Discipline was not the issue. Desire to score was.

The Signal Was Right, The Market Was Wrong

What Rangers Must Learn

You cannot come to a European away tie with a one-goal lead, dominate possession by a small margin, and produce one shot on target. The desire to go and win the match was not there. The accountability for that sits with every player who crossed that white line. Rangers made seven substitutions across 120 minutes trying to find the answer. The answer was simpler than any tactical change. Compete. Get in the box. Force the goalkeeper to work. They did none of that consistently enough.

Jablonec won 1-0. Rangers are out. The scoreline is straightforward and the reasons are straightforward. When you do not compete in the basics of a knockout tie, the result you deserve is the one you get. End of.
