Surridge Snatches 2-2 Draw for Nashville as Miami Squander Six Big Chances

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Inter Miami 2-2 Nashville SC. Write it down. Stare at it. Because that scoreline is an indictment of everything wrong with a team that had 62 per cent of the ball, created six big chances, hit the woodwork three times, and still could not win a home match. Nashville came here, scored in the fourth minute, and left with a point. Miami should be furious with themselves. End of.

The Basics Were Not Good Enough

Sam Surridge put Nashville ahead inside four minutes with a right-foot finish, assisted by Andy Najar. Four minutes. Miami had not even settled and they were already chasing the game. That is not a Nashville problem. That is a Miami problem. You do not concede in the fourth minute at home by being switched on and ready to compete. The desire to defend was not there from the first whistle.

Miami equalised in the 19th minute, but not through their own quality. Reed Baker-Whiting put the ball into his own net. So Miami's first goal came from a Nashville mistake. That is not a compliment. That is luck dressed up as a result.

Lionel Messi gave Miami the lead in the 62nd minute, finishing with his left foot from a Rodrigo De Paul assist. For a moment it looked like that would be enough. It was not. Surridge struck again in the 90th minute to make it 2-2, and Miami had nothing left to answer with. A team that created six big chances let a striker score twice against them and still walked away with nothing. Unacceptable.

Six Big Chances. None Converted by Open Play. Three Off the Woodwork.

This is the thing. You can talk about possession all day long. Miami had 62 per cent of it. They attempted 551 passes at 90 per cent accuracy. They had 10 successful dribbles to Nashville's three. By every measure of control, they dominated this match. And they still drew at home.

Six big chances created. Six. Nashville created one. Nashville scored twice. Miami scored once in open play through Messi and once via an own goal. The finishing was a disaster. Miami also hit the woodwork three times. Three. Nashville hit it zero times. That is not bad luck. That is a systematic failure to execute the basics in front of goal. Finishing is a basic. Composure in the final third is a basic. You practice it. You demand it. Miami's forwards did not deliver it tonight.

Nashville's goalkeeper made three saves. Miami's goalkeeper made one. That gap in saves required tells you everything about where the real danger was coming from. Nashville were more direct and more clinical. With only 38 per cent of the ball and 27 dangerous attacks compared to Miami's 46, they still managed to score twice. That is called efficiency. Miami had none of it.

Nashville Were Compact and Ruthless

Listen, I am not going to pretend Nashville played beautiful football. They did not need to. They sat at 38 per cent possession and made it work. They had 11 interceptions to Miami's seven. They blocked four shots to Miami's two. They were organised and they were hard to break down properly, and when their moments came, Surridge took them both.

Nashville also showed the right attitude in terms of accountability. They went behind to the own goal and did not panic. They stayed in the match, defended their shape, and trusted that they would create something. When Miami took the lead in the 62nd minute, Nashville could have folded. Instead they stayed at it and equalised with a minute of normal time remaining. That is character. That is what competing looks like.

The early yellow card for Alex Muyl in the ninth minute could have disrupted Nashville's discipline. It did not. Muyl was eventually substituted at the break for Elias Saad. Nashville reorganised and kept competing. Miami, despite playing with a numerical and territorial advantage for large parts of the match, could not press home that advantage. That says more about Miami's standards than it does about Nashville's defensive quality.

Miami's Discipline Was Also Poor

Three yellow cards for Inter Miami. Two for Nashville. Fricio Caicedo booked for a foul in the 41st minute. Germán Berterame carded for a foul in the 86th. Matías Galarza, who came on as a substitute in the 66th minute, picked up a yellow card for time wasting in the 90th. Time wasting with nine minutes of play left and your team drawing at home. There is a word for that kind of attitude. The word is unacceptable.

Galarza came on to make a difference and ended up killing time in a match Miami needed to win. That tells you something about the mentality on show in those final moments. You do not waste time when you need a goal. You compete for every second. Miami's players chose not to.

What Needs to Change

Inter Miami's last five matches in MLS show one win, three draws and one loss. In ten matches, four wins and four draws alongside two losses. This is a team that is drawing too many games it should be winning. The clean sheet record is practically non-existent and tonight proved why. They cannot defend from the front and they cannot finish when the game is on the line.

The thing is, the talent is clearly there. Messi scored. De Paul assisted. The movement and the passing were often of a high standard. But football is a results business. Talent without accountability and execution is just entertainment. Miami entertained tonight. They did not win. And in this game, winning is the only thing that matters.

Nashville go away with a point they earned. Inter Miami stay at home with a point they should have turned into three. Sam Surridge took his two goals with composure and desire. Miami need to find the same. Fast.
