The Basics Tell the Story

HamKam 1-5 Molde. Write it down. Frame it. That is what happens when a team with one win in their last ten Eliteserien matches hosts a side that knows how to compete and punish weakness. The scoreline is not harsh on HamKam. If anything, it flatters them.

The thing is, HamKam had conceded 22 goals in their previous ten Eliteserien matches before this one. That is not a team with a defensive problem. That is a team with a defensive catastrophe. And Molde, to their credit, walked straight through the front door.

A Goal, Then a Card, Then Chaos

HamKam actually got the first goal. Jalal Abdullai put the ball in the net in the fifth minute with his left foot. For approximately sixty seconds, this looked like it might be a match. Then Abdullai picked up a yellow card in the sixth minute. One minute between scoring and getting booked. That set the tone for HamKam's afternoon rather neatly.

By the 17th minute, HamKam were already making a forced substitution. Fredrik Kristensen Dahl came off, replaced by Birk Risa. They were barely a quarter of an hour into the match and the disruption was already piling up. Molde, meanwhile, stayed composed. They had a player go off themselves before half-time, Aleksander Andresen coming on, and it did not cost them a thing.

Ofkir Levels Before the Break

Mohamed Ofkir headed Molde level on 46 minutes, right on the stroke of half-time, assisted by the just-introduced Andresen. The timing was brutal for HamKam. You come in at 1-1 and maybe you regroup, maybe you find something. Molde made sure that conversation never happened. They scored just before the whistle and took the momentum into the dressing room with them.

Koné-Doherty Takes Over

The second half belonged to Trent Koné-Doherty. He scored with his right foot in the 56th minute. He scored again with his right foot in the 58th minute. Two goals in two minutes. That is the match over. That is the contest finished. HamKam had no answer and, looking at what they have produced in recent weeks, you would struggle to suggest they had much left to give.

Koné-Doherty was not done. He added a third in the 84th minute with his left foot, completing a hat-trick that summarised everything about the afternoon. Three goals, two different feet, and HamKam unable to stop any of them. His second was assisted by Jalal Abdullai, the same man who had been booked in the sixth minute. If nothing else, Abdullai had an eventful afternoon.

Kristian Lonebu added a fifth in the 90th minute. At that point it was confirmation rather than news. Lonebu had himself come on as a substitute in the 63rd minute and still had time to get on the scoresheet. That tells you something about the state of this HamKam defence.

The Numbers Do Not Lie

Here is something that will confuse people who rely on possession figures and pass counts. HamKam actually had more of the ball. 52 per cent possession against 48 per cent. They completed more passes. They had more shots total, 18 to Molde's 15. They had more shots on target, seven to three. They had more shots inside the box, 15 to eight.

Listen, those numbers mean nothing. Absolutely nothing. End of. Molde scored five goals from three shots on target. That is finishing. That is clinical. That is what accountability in the final third looks like. HamKam had seven shots on target and scored one. One. The basics of converting your chances were beyond them for most of this afternoon.

Molde put 29 crosses into the box. HamKam managed eight. That difference in delivery and intent in the final third is where Molde separated themselves tactically. Ofkir's goal came from a header. The service was there because Molde had the attitude and the desire to keep delivering it.

HamKam's Injury Problems Are Real

It would be wrong to ignore the context. HamKam came into this match with four players listed as out. One of them has been out since February with a long-term injury. Another faces a return date of 31 December. A third suffered a major injury in July. These are not minor inconveniences. These are significant absences that strip a squad of options and depth.

But injuries do not explain conceding 22 goals in ten matches. Injuries do not explain the lack of defensive shape or the inability to hold a lead. When HamKam beat Vålerenga 3-0 back in July, that was their only win in ten. One win. One clean sheet in the same sample. The standards here have been unacceptable for some time and a 5-1 home defeat is the logical conclusion of that run.

Molde Were Not Perfect

To be fair to HamKam, and I mean that genuinely, Molde conceded three goals in their previous match against Vålerenga, five in their draw with Sarpsborg 08 before that. This Molde side are not exactly a defensive fortress themselves. In ten Eliteserien matches they conceded 19 goals. They kept one clean sheet from those ten. Ninety per cent of those matches saw both teams score.

But on this occasion Molde competed. They brought desire and they brought a finisher in Koné-Doherty who punished every mistake. That is the difference between the two sides right now. Not system, not formation. One team had someone who could punish the other's errors. The other team did not.

What Needs to Change at HamKam

The word is accountability. HamKam conceded ten goals in their last five Eliteserien matches coming in here. They had one clean sheet from those five. That is not a run of bad luck. That is a structural problem in how this side defends as a unit.

Losing at home 5-1 is unacceptable. There is no other word for it. The basics of defending, tracking runners, holding your shape, making the goalkeeper's job manageable, were not there. You can have all the ball in the world and it counts for nothing if you cannot keep it out of your own net.

Molde deserved every goal they scored. HamKam need to look hard at their standards before this gets any worse. End of.
