Can Either Side End a Wretched Run? Genoa vs Venezia Is a Crisis Derby

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

There are bad runs. Then there is what Genoa and Venezia are currently living through. When these two meet on Sunday 25 October, Serie A will serve up a fixture between two sides who have not won a single league match in their last five attempts. This is not a preview about title races or European ambitions. This is about two clubs in genuine distress, and which one finds something, anything, to cling to.

Genoa: Losing the Basics at Home

Genoa's last five Serie A matches make for grim reading. One draw, four defeats. Three goals scored, ten conceded. Zero clean sheets. That is not a wobble. That is a team that has stopped doing the basics right.

Look at the results. Genoa lost to Napoli 0-2 and to Lazio 0-1. Those are top-end sides and you can accept that. Then Como came to town and left with a 4-1 win. Como. That scoreline tells you everything about where Genoa's standards currently sit. A draw against Frosinone and a narrow 1-2 defeat to Parma rounded off five weeks that the club will want to forget quickly.

The thing is, the defensive numbers are what condemn them. Ten goals conceded in five matches means this backline is not competing. You cannot dress that up. Two players are also confirmed out through injury ahead of Sunday, which does not help a squad already struggling for cohesion and attitude on the pitch.

Genoa are at home. That ought to count for something. Right now, it is not counting for much.

Venezia: Five Straight Defeats and No Goals in Three

Listen, Genoa's form is bad. Venezia's form is worse. Five Serie A matches, five defeats. Four goals scored across all five games, thirteen conceded. That is a defensive record that goes beyond poor organisation. That reflects a team that has lost the will to compete for ninety minutes.

Venezia lost to Lecce 0-2, to AC Milan 0-2, to Frosinone 2-3, to Fiorentina 2-4, and to Lazio 0-2. Only in the Frosinone and Fiorentina defeats did they score at all. Three of those five matches ended with Venezia failing to get a single goal on the board. That is an attacking unit without confidence, ideas, or accountability.

No clean sheets either. Not one in five attempts. The defending is unacceptable at this level and there is no softer way to put it.

The Bet: Genoa to Win

I am not in the business of backing accumulators or hedging my opinion. I back one thing and I back it with conviction.

Genoa to win. Home advantage, the slightly less catastrophic defensive record, and the fact that Venezia simply cannot stop shipping goals. Genoa have kept more of their recent matches closer than Venezia have. That is not a glowing endorsement. It is a cold-eyed read of two very limited sides, and one of them is playing at home.

The thing is, someone has to win a football match eventually. Genoa are the more likely candidate here. End of.

What to Watch

Watch the first goal. In matches between two sides this low on confidence and this poor defensively, the opening goal is enormous. The side that concedes first in this fixture is likely to capitulate. Both sets of players will be nervous. The team that settles quickest wins.

Desire and basics will decide this one. It will not be pretty. It will probably be scrappy and tense for long periods. But one side will find a way, and on Sunday at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, the home crowd gives Genoa the edge they need.
