Fiorentina 2-2 Juventus: Bremer Heads Juve Level But Viola Hold On For A Point

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Fiorentina and Juventus shared the points on Sunday evening. The final score was 2-2. It looked like a decent result for Juve given the circumstances. It did not feel like one for Fiorentina, and that is the problem.

The Basics Were There. The Consistency Was Not.

Fiorentina started well. Mateo Pellegrino put them in front in the fourth minute, heading home from a Pedro Gonçalves delivery. That is how you start a home game against Juventus. Early goal, crowd alive, opposition rattled. The thing is, Fiorentina have won one of their last five Serie A matches going into this. You need to hold onto moments like that. They did not.

Juventus got themselves level through Nick Woltemade on 32 minutes, a right-foot finish set up by Randal Kolo Muani. That was avoidable. Juve had Cabal booked in the 13th minute and Bremer booked in the 22nd. They were down to a patched-up backline and still Fiorentina could not keep them out before half-time. Unacceptable. You have a one-goal lead, the opposition have two players walking a tightrope on yellow cards, and you let them draw level before the break. That is a failure of attitude and concentration. End of.

Juve Were There To Be Hurt. Fiorentina Did Not Hurt Them Enough.

Listen, Juventus had three yellows in this match. Cabal went off at half-time, replaced by Zeki Çelik. Bremer, already on a booking, was still on the pitch until the 89th minute. That is a team under stress. A team that conceded 12 corners in this match. A team that attempted 27 crosses and left gaps in behind.

Fiorentina had 22 total shots. They had 13 shots inside the box. They missed one big chance and had nine shots off target. Those numbers tell you they got into the right areas. The execution was not there often enough. That is the basics failing at the worst moment.

Alieu Njie gave Fiorentina the lead again on 54 minutes. Right-foot finish, 2-1. Good goal. The home side had the lead and Juventus were stretched. Then Bremer, a centre-back who had already been booked, came up for a corner and headed home from a Douglas Luiz delivery in the 66th minute. A defender who should have been managing himself out of the game won a header to equalise. That is not Juve being brilliant. That is Fiorentina failing to defend a set piece against a man who had every reason to be cautious. It tells you something about their standards right now.

The Discipline Gap Was Telling

Juventus picked up three yellow cards in this match. Cabal for a foul in the 13th minute. Bremer for a foul in the 22nd. Kolo Muani for an argument in the 73rd. That is a side that was frustrated, stretched, and at times desperate. They were still more composed than their card count suggested, because they came from behind twice.

Fiorentina had one yellow card, to Christ Inao Oulaï on 50 minutes. So they had the discipline. What they lacked was the ability to close the game out when they had the chance. That is the accountability issue staring this squad in the face.

Juve's Territorial Dominance Did Not Win Them The Match

Juventus had 59 per cent of the ball. They had 94 attacks to Fiorentina's 85. They won 12 corners. They had 27 total crosses. The thing is, all of that produced a draw, not a win. Fiorentina had 20 tackles to Juve's 16, and won 13 of them. They had six interceptions to Juve's five. They competed. They were not overrun. They just could not hold a lead when it mattered.

Both goalkeepers made four saves each. Both teams had six shots on target. This was a tight, competitive match. I am not here to tell you Fiorentina were poor. I am telling you they were good enough to win and did not. That is the conversation they need to have in that dressing room.

Going Forward, The Problems Are Clear

In the five Serie A matches before this one, Fiorentina conceded eleven goals. Every single match in that sample had both teams scoring. Zero clean sheets. Coming into tonight they had shipped two or more in four of those five. Those are defensive standards that cannot continue at this level.

Juventus, over their last five Serie A matches, kept two clean sheets and conceded six goals in total. They drew once, won twice, lost twice. They are not a machine right now either. That makes this draw even harder for Fiorentina to swallow. They were playing a Juventus side that lost to Genoa 2-0 and to Lazio 3-0 in recent weeks. This was not Juve at their best. It was Juve grinding out a point with ten men effectively managing yellow cards, their centre-back scoring from a set piece, and their discipline all over the place.

Fiorentina brought on Brescianini and Nicolò Fagioli from the bench at the 65th minute. Fagioli on loan from Juventus, playing against his parent club. That detail tells its own story about where both clubs are right now.

The Verdict

Fiorentina will point to the fact they scored twice, competed hard, and finished the match with more tackles and interceptions than Juventus. Fair enough. The thing is, results are what matter. One win in six Serie A matches is a standards problem. Conceding after going ahead twice in one game is a mentality problem. Both of those need addressing, not explaining.

Juventus take a point they probably deserved on pure desire and come-from-behind character, even if the performance was far from convincing. Bremer scored the goal that matters. That is football. Sometimes a defender on a yellow card wins you a point with his head from a corner. The other team had to allow that to happen, and Fiorentina did.
