Falkirk vs Rangers Preview: Gers Arrive at the Bairns in Desperate Need of Points
Jay Thompson ·
Last updated: 19 August 2026. Right, we are two weeks out from this one and I have been sitting on some numbers that genuinely surprised me. Falkirk vs Rangers at the Falkirk Stadium on Wednesday 2 September. Scottish Premiership. 8pm kick-off. And honestly? This is a more interesting fixture than most people are giving it credit for.
The State of Rangers Right Now
Look, I am going to be straight with you. Rangers are ninth in the table after two games. One point. One draw, one loss. Two goals scored, three conceded. That is not where a club of Rangers' size expects to be sitting. Not even this early in the season.
And the form over the last five games overall? Mate. Win, draw, loss, loss, loss. LDWLL. That momentum slope is trending the wrong way. They have scored nine goals in their last five across all competitions but conceded ten, and here is the thing that jumps out at me... their clean sheet percentage in that stretch is zero. Absolutely zero. Every single game has seen both teams score. BTTS in 100 percent of their last five. Every. Single. One.
Away from home specifically, Rangers have actually been decent with the ball. Fourteen goals in their last five away games. But eleven conceded on the road in that same run. So they are capable of hurting teams... they are just leaking goals like a burst pipe at the same time. Not exactly inspiring stuff from a defensive standpoint.
There is also an injury concern to flag. The data sheet shows a Rangers player is currently out with a moderate injury as of 9 August, with no expected return date confirmed. I cannot tell you exactly who it is from what we have, but an unnamed moderate injury with no timeline is never great news two weeks before a match.
Falkirk Are in a Rough Patch Themselves
Here is the thing though. Falkirk are not exactly flying either. Tenth in the table. Also on one point after two games. Zero goals scored. Two conceded. And when you look at the longer form window, it gets properly grim.
Their last ten at home? One win, two draws, five losses. Goals for twelve, goals against twenty-two at home over that stretch. Twenty-two. That is not a typo. Their possession average over that run is sitting at eleven percent. Eleven! I know that sounds like a misprint but it is what the data says and it does tell you something about how deep they are sitting and how much they are getting overrun.
The last five overall makes for even harder reading. No wins. One draw. Four losses. Three goals scored, thirteen conceded. The momentum slope is pointing down across every single context window for Falkirk. This is a team under real pressure.
So we have got two sides in poor form meeting each other. Which means... anything could happen. And that is where it gets interesting for us.
What the Head-to-Head Tells Us
Right, the head-to-head record between these two in this competition only goes back one meeting. Rangers beat Falkirk six goals to three back in April. Six-three. Nine goals in one game. Nine! Both teams scored, obviously. Over two-and-a-half goals, obviously. If your grandad had wandered in at half time and picked a correct score for the second half alone he would have cleaned up.
Look at the fixtures context and that result makes a lot of sense. Falkirk struggle defensively at the best of times and Rangers, even in a difficult patch, carry a real goal threat going forward. The one previous meeting screams goals. Both ways.
The League Table Picture
With only two games played the table is not enormously meaningful yet but the context matters. Rangers sitting ninth is alarming given the expectations around the club. They need a result here. Falkirk at tenth need one even more desperately if they want to avoid getting dragged into a relegation scrap early.
The xG numbers from the standings are actually worth a look here. I actually looked at the numbers for once and Rangers have an xG for of 4.5 versus an xG against of 3.1 in this season so far. Basically that means they should be creating more than they are conceding. That is not a team that is broken. That is a team that is misfiring a bit. Which, if you trust the process (I do not, by the way), suggests a correction is coming.
Falkirk? Their xG for this season is 1.4 against an xG against of 3.3. Yeah. Not great. xG, by the way, is the stat that nerds love and that basically tells you how many goals a team should have scored based on the quality of their chances. I mock it constantly but even I cannot ignore a number that low for Falkirk. They are not just unlucky. They are not creating enough.
The Jay Thompson Read on This One
Honestly? Rangers should win this. They are the bigger club, they carry more firepower, and Falkirk's home form has been shocking. A side with Falkirk's defensive numbers hosting anyone with a functioning attack is going to be in trouble.
But... Rangers keeping a clean sheet? That clean sheet percentage of zero across their last five games, combined with Falkirk's own ability to nick a goal on the counter even in defeats, makes a shutout feel unlikely. Remember, sixty percent of Falkirk's last ten home games ended with both teams scoring.
I'm going big on this. Rangers to win and both teams to score. That is my call for this one. The six-three from earlier in the year is lodged in my brain and I cannot shake it. Don't @ me if it ends one-nil.
The Saturday Special Watch
This one is a Wednesday game so it is not going in the Saturday acca. But if you are building a midweek slip... Rangers to win, BTTS, and over two-and-a-half goals feels very much in play based on everything we have seen. Every single stat window is pointing toward a high-scoring game. You heard it here first. Well, here and probably on about forty other websites. But still.
Back to the drawing board if Falkirk nick it. Which, at this stage of form for both sides, I genuinely cannot rule out completely. That is football. Mad game. Absolute scenes await. Probably.
