Right, let's be honest about this one. Derry City vs Rijeka in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying. Not exactly the glamour tie of the round. But listen, this is what European football looks like for clubs like Derry City and I love it for that. A proper tie. Something on the line. The Brandywell buzzing.

And then Rijeka went and nicked it 1-0. Of course they did.

Depending on how bookings carry over in this round of qualifying, Derry could have players sitting out the second leg. That would be a disaster.

The Substitution Chaos

Derry threw four substitutions at it from the 62nd minute onwards which tells you the manager knew something needed to change. Fair enough. You're 1-0 down at home in Europe, you roll the dice. But it didn't shift the momentum meaningfully. The dangerous attack numbers were promising but they just couldn't get the equaliser.

Rijeka also had an injury during the game, which I noticed from the stats, though they managed fine without making dramatic changes until late on. Rijeka's goalscorer was actually subbed off in the 90th minute which feels like the away side just seeing the game out and protecting their players for the second leg. Smart management that.

What This Means for the Second Leg

Look, 1-0 is not dead. It absolutely isn't. But Derry now have to go to Rijeka and score. They have to. And based on what we've seen in this European campaign so far, that is a massive ask.

Rijeka are averaging 16 shots per game and 71% possession in this competition. Seventy one percent. Derry had 29% possession in their away form going in. You do the maths on how that second leg is likely to go. It's not pretty. Rijeka will be at home, confident, and they've already kept a clean sheet against this Derry side over 90 minutes.

The one thing I'd say in Derry's favour is that the dangerous attack stat tonight actually showed they can get into positions. 61 dangerous attacks is nothing to sniff at. If they can convert even a small percentage of that into proper chances in the second leg they give themselves a puncher's chance.

Honest Verdict

Rijeka were the better side. They scored early, they defended well, they kept their discipline. One yellow card all game from their end while Derry were boiling over. The Croatian side looked like the more composed team at European level and that experience probably told.

For Derry City, getting here is still an achievement worth celebrating. But this first leg result makes progression very, very difficult. They need to go to Croatia and win. That's the situation. I'm not going to dress it up.

Honestly? Rijeka to go through. You heard it here first. Don't @ me if Derry somehow pull off the miracle but based on everything we've seen... trust the process is not going to cut it here. Derry need something special.
