Deportivo La Coruña 1-1 Levante: Late Equaliser Denies Levante Victory After Nsongo Strike

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

A Point Each, But Both Should Be Asking Questions

Deportivo La Coruña 1-1 Levante. That is the result. Write it down. Now ask yourself whether either side deserved more. The thing is, when you look at both teams' recent form, a draw is about right. One win each in their last five La Liga matches. Neither side competing at a level that demands anything better. This was a match between two teams trying to find something they have not yet found this season.

Deportivo had the ball more. They had 54 percent possession, six accurate crosses, and 20 total crosses. They put the effort in on the flanks. But effort without end product is just running around. They created zero big chances. Zero. Levante, with less of the ball, created two. That tells you everything about who was sharper in the moments that mattered for most of this game.

Levante Take the Lead Through Nsongo

The goal that opened the scoring came in the 63rd minute and it arrived right off the back of Levante's double substitution. Adrià Altimira and Adama Traoré came on at 62 minutes. One minute later, Bil Nsongo put Levante ahead with a right-foot shot. That is decisive management from Levante's bench. You make changes, you get a direct reward. That is how it is supposed to work.

Luismi Cruz had picked up a yellow card for a foul in the 42nd minute, which made the substitution necessary as much as tactical. Altimira, his replacement, then picked up a yellow of his own in stoppage time for a foul. So Levante brought on a man to avoid problems and ended up with another card anyway. Standards.

Iván Romero had already been booked for handball in the 33rd minute on the Deportivo side. The discipline from both teams was patchy throughout. Deportivo's Adrián Dela was booked in the 89th minute for time wasting. When you are level and running down the clock, that tells you where Deportivo's heads were. Holding on to a point they had just nicked. Understandable. Still sloppy.

Deportivo Hit Back Through Requena Sánchez

The equaliser came from Daniel Requena Sánchez in the 82nd minute, assisted by Petar Ratkov, who had come on as a substitute in the 69th minute. Ratkov barely had time to get warm before he was involved in the goal that rescued Deportivo's evening. That substitution worked. Credit where it is due.

Deportivo had made a series of changes. Jon Ander Olasagasti came on for Enzo Bardeli at 69 minutes alongside Ratkov for Oriol Rey. Jeremy Toljan replaced Nacho Pérez at 76 minutes. Víctor García came on right at the death. Four substitutions, and it was the Ratkov involvement that made the difference. Sometimes the manager gets it right. Sometimes it is pure fortune. Often it is both.

Levante responded to falling behind by bringing on Angeliño and Jonathan Asp Jensen at 80 minutes, and Miguel Loureiro at 85 minutes. Five substitutions used. They were throwing bodies at the problem but Deportivo held the draw.

The Numbers Tell a Complicated Story

Listen, I am not going to pretend the statistics paint either team in a flattering light. Deportivo had 11 shots total, four on target, and six off target. Levante had 13 shots, five on target, and hit the woodwork once. Levante were slightly more threatening but could not convert when it counted. That big chance they missed will sting.

Defensively, Deportivo won 16 tackles to Levante's eight. They made six interceptions to Levante's three. The home side did the physical work in their own half. But they could not turn that defensive solidity into a sustained attacking threat. Six key passes to Levante's ten. Levante were pulling more strings in midfield when they had the ball.

Both teams had four saves from their respective goalkeepers. It was an even enough contest in terms of genuine danger, which is why the draw, on reflection, is a fair result. A frustrating fair result. But fair.

Form Going In Was a Warning

This result was not a surprise. Deportivo came into this match having won once in their last five La Liga matches, with two draws and two losses. Their last outing was a 2-3 defeat to Real Sociedad. Before that, draws against Real Betis and Getafe. One win in five. That is not good enough for a team that wants to push up the table.

Levante were no better. One win in their five completed La Liga matches going into this fixture, two draws and two losses. They had drawn 3-3 with Sevilla just days earlier. A team giving up three goals and feeling fortunate to salvage something does not inspire confidence in the back four. Levante's defensive record in those five matches was 12 goals conceded. Twelve. Both sides scored in 80 percent of those matches. Levante had kept just one clean sheet in their sample of five.

The thing is, when you put two teams with that kind of record up against each other, you should not be shocked when it ends 1-1 and both sets of fans go home slightly empty. This was the most predictable draw in La Liga this week.

What Both Managers Need to Address

Deportivo dominated possession and the crossing stats but created nothing of substance. Six accurate crosses from twenty attempts. That conversion rate from wide areas is unacceptable. If you are going to build your game around getting the ball wide and delivering, your attackers need to compete better in the box, and your deliveries need to be more precise. The basics were not there often enough.

For Levante, the question is accountability at the back. You create two big chances, you score from one, and you still cannot hold a lead for nine minutes. Desire to see a game out requires more than just quality. It requires attitude and concentration. Levante lost that concentration and paid for it immediately.

A point each. Neither side will be dancing in the streets. End of.
