Right, it's gone half midnight UK time by the time this one kicks off, so you've either set an alarm or you're a proper night owl. Either way, this DC United vs New England clash is worth staying up for. Not because it's a title decider. Not because the stakes are enormous. But because, mate, this game has goals written all over it.
DC United are sitting ninth in the Eastern Conference with 23 points from 18 games. Five wins, eight draws, five losses. They're not a disaster but they're not threatening anyone near the top either. New England are third in the East on 30 points, nine wins, three draws, six losses. So on paper this looks like a comfortable away day for the Revolution. Look at the fixtures though, and it gets more complicated than that.
DC United at home have been... chaotic. In their last ten home games they've kept exactly zero clean sheets. None. Not one. Their home BTTS rate over that stretch is almost 89 percent. They've conceded 20 goals at home in those ten games while scoring 17. So they're not completely toothless, but they're wide open at the back. If you're watching this hoping for a tight defensive masterclass, you've got the wrong game.
Honestly, DC United's recent form is a bit of a head-scratcher. Their last five overall reads DWDDD. Four draws in five. They haven't lost in that run but they haven't exactly been setting the world alight either. Their momentum slope is creeping upward which suggests something might click soon, but right now they look like a side that's found a way to not lose without quite finding a way to win.
The interesting bit is that every single one of their last five games has seen both teams score. Every. Single. One. A BTTS rate of 100 percent in the last five is not something you see very often. And at home specifically, over the last five, it's also 100 percent BTTS with 80 percent of those games going over 2.5 goals. DC United's home ground is basically a goal buffet right now.
Now here's the thing about New England. At home they've been brilliant. Seven wins from their last ten home games, 15 goals scored, real dominance in those matches. But away from home? It's a completely different story.
Their last ten away games show one win, two draws, four losses with seven goals scored and twelve conceded. Their last five away reads DLDWL. That's not the form of a side you'd confidently back to go and dominate on the road. They've kept zero clean sheets in their last five away games and their BTTS rate away from home over the last five is 80 percent.
Look, New England are clearly the better team overall. Third in the East, more quality throughout the squad. But there's a real gap between their home self and their away self, and DC United's Audi Field is a place where goals happen regardless of the visitor.
There's only two meetings on record between these two sides and they've split them perfectly. One win each, no draws. DC United have scored three goals across both games, New England two. The last meeting back in April this year ended in a New England win. So the Revolution have that recent edge, but we're talking tiny sample sizes here. Don't put too much weight on the head to head either way.
I'm going big on this. BTTS Yes at 1.62 with William Hill. I know, I know, 1.62 isn't going to retire anyone. But listen to the evidence before you scroll past.
DC United have seen both teams score in 100 percent of their last five games. In their last five home games specifically, BTTS has landed every single time. New England, despite being a decent side, are shipping goals on the road. Their away BTTS rate over the last five is 80 percent. DC United are almost certainly going to score because they've scored in every recent game. New England are almost certainly going to score because DC United don't keep clean sheets at home. I actually looked at the numbers for once and everything is pointing the same direction here.
The xG stuff, which I know Marcus is going to wave at me at some point, shows DC United with 19.3 expected goals for and 18.1 against across the season. That's roughly balanced, which tells you this isn't a team that dramatically over or under performs in front of goal. They just... concede and score at roughly the rate you'd expect. Which is a lot, based on recent evidence.
New England's numbers show 17.5 expected for and 18.2 expected against across the season. So even the fancy stats people, and I say this with affection, can't make a case for either defence being particularly solid.
Honestly... maybe. DC United at home have that momentum slope ticking upward. They haven't been blown away in recent games, they just haven't converted enough of their chances to win matches. New England away from home are there for the taking. The double chance of Home or Draw is priced at 1.33 which is shorter than I'd like, but it's not ridiculous given DC United's home record of not getting hammered.
If DC United are going to pick up a positive result anywhere, a home game against a New England side that struggles on the road is the kind of fixture you circle. They won't be favourites. The table says New England are the better side. But football doesn't always care about the table, does it.
Right so my official tip is BTTS Yes. Get it done. 1.62 is solid value when the data is this clear. If you're feeling braver and want something for the acca, chuck on over 2.5 goals at whatever odds your bookmaker is offering because 80 percent of DC United's last five home games have cleared that line. I'll be watching this from my sofa at half midnight UK time with a cup of tea, fully expecting to see goals. You heard it here first. Don't @ me if it ends 0-0. It won't. Probably.
Correct means the selection settled as won on the 90-minute result. Every selection counted here was recorded before kickoff. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
