Right, let's talk about this one. Cambridge had 263 passes to Wigan's 526. They completed 65 percent of them compared to Wigan's 83 percent. On paper, Wigan were the better team with the ball. But the U's were hitting 83 long passes, moving direct, winning duels, winning headers, 26 successful headers to Wigan's 18, and making it count when it mattered. It was a proper lower league smash-and-grab, executed with real conviction.

Cambridge Kill It Off Early in the Second Half

If the first goal on three minutes raised eyebrows, the goal on 52 minutes basically ended the contest. Another right foot shot, 3-0, and Cambridge looked like they were cruising to one of those opening day results you end up talking about for months.

Wigan made three changes from half time onwards, starting with a substitution right on 46 minutes before it all kicked off. Then two more at 60 minutes as they went all in trying to get back into it. And honestly, fair play to them. They kept going.

Wigan's Fightback Is Both Impressive and Gutting

Here is where it gets interesting. Wigan had 18 shots in total. Eighteen. Cambridge had 17. So the shot count was almost identical but Wigan had 66 percent of the ball to do it with. They created five big chances and missed three of them. Three big chances missed. That is your game right there.

The goals came at 69 and 73 minutes, a left foot finish and then a right foot shot from one of the subs brought on at 60 minutes. Two goals in four minutes, suddenly it was 3-2, Wigan's fans daring to dream, Cambridge's fans absolutely having kittens. There was even a woodwork moment for Wigan in there. Hit the post or bar, 3-2 on the board, nerves absolutely shredded at the ground.

Cambridge made their own subs to try and manage it. Three changes of their own, bringing on fresh legs at 74, 80, and 90 minutes. They did just enough. Just. A late card for a foul right at the death summed up the tension but Cambridge held firm. Three points. Done.

The Stats Tell a Wild Story

Honestly, look at this. Wigan had 105 attacks to Cambridge's 67. They had 62 dangerous attacks compared to Cambridge's 49. They had more shots off target, more key passes, more big chances created. They had 66 percent possession. And they lost.

Cambridge had 11 interceptions to Wigan's 4. They won 49 duels to Wigan's 41. They had 13 goal kicks to Wigan's 4, which tells you exactly how deep they were sitting and how much they were inviting pressure on. The U's were defending for their lives in long stretches, especially in that second half, and they knew it.

I actually looked at the numbers for once and Cambridge's home form from last season showed them averaging over 2 goals per game with 10 goals in their last five home matches. So maybe the under 2.5 was always a stretch. Maybe. Possibly. Alright, it was wrong, moving on.

What Does This Tell Us Going Forward?

Look at the fixtures for Cambridge. If they can keep that defensive shape when they are under the cosh, win their duels, and take their chances early, they will be a problem for teams this season. That said, conceding two in the last 25 minutes after being 3-0 up is not ideal. Wigan created a proper chance to equalise and hit the woodwork. Cambridge need to sort that out or it will cost them points before long.

For Wigan, the concern is the finishing. Five big chances, three missed. Eighteen shots, four on target. They had enough of the ball and enough of the territory to get something from this game. The positive is the attacking intent and the fight shown after going three down. The negative is that fight should not have been needed if they had taken their chances in the first place.

Opening day of the season, 3-2 with five goals, a comeback that almost happened, a keeper making saves at both ends, a late card in stoppage time. This is why we watch football, mate. Absolutely proper.
