Against Lincoln they were flat. The desire was not there from the first whistle. You cannot look at a side with 33 per cent possession at home and tell me the attitude was right. You cannot.

Draper Does The Damage

Freddie Draper had already been booked before the hour mark. He picked up a yellow card for a foul in the forty-fifth minute. He did not let that slow him down. Eight minutes into the second half, Draper put Lincoln ahead with a left-foot shot, assisted by Ben House. That was it. One moment of quality. One goal. Game over.

Draper was then withdrawn in the seventy-first minute, replaced by Rob Street. He had done his job. He competed, he caused problems, and when his chance came he took it. That is what desire looks like. Bristol City's players should study it.

Lincoln's Discipline Told A Story

Lincoln City picked up two yellow cards themselves, Lisav Naif Eissat booked for a foul in the twenty-eighth minute and Lorent Tolaj cautioned for persistent fouling in the forty-first. Lincoln won more duels. They made more interceptions. Their players tackled more. Bristol City had more fouls because they were being beaten to the ball and resorting to the boot. That is not competing. That is panic disguised as effort.

You do not want respectable at home. You want three points.

The home side managed four shots on target across the entire ninety minutes. Four. They had one big chance created and did not miss it because they converted it. No. They had zero big chances missed, which sounds good until you realise they only had one big chance created and Lincoln had the same number. The difference was Lincoln took theirs.

The Substitutions Told You Nothing New

Bristol City made four changes. Reeco Hackett came on for Chiedozie Ogbene at sixty-three minutes. Daniel Oyegoke replaced Adam Reach at seventy-one minutes. Rob Street came on for the goalscorer Draper, who was Lincoln's man. Tom Bayliss entered in the ninety-sixth minute. None of it changed anything. When you are chasing a game in the final quarter, you need energy and accountability from those coming off the bench. There is no evidence in these numbers that it arrived.

Lincoln made five substitutions of their own. Dom Ballard on for Jed Wallace at fifty-nine minutes. Elijah Adebayo, Rob Atkinson, and Sam Greenwood all came on at seventy-six minutes. Sam Bell replaced Cameron Pring in the eighty-sixth minute. They managed the game. They were professional. They did what teams with a one-goal lead should do, which is stay compact, keep their shape, and make Bristol City solve the problem. Bristol City could not solve it.

What This Means

The thing is, Bristol City's defensive record going into this game was already a concern. One clean sheet in their last ten Championship matches. Nine goals conceded in their last five alone. Now they have a clean sheet against them and they cannot score. The standards have slipped. Someone in that dressing room needs to stand up and say it plainly, because what happened on Tuesday evening was not acceptable for a side with Championship ambitions.

Lincoln City, on the other hand, showed exactly what this division requires. Hard work. Organisation. A clinical moment when it mattered. Draper's goal was all they needed because their collective effort made sure one goal was enough. That is a team with the right attitude. End of.
