Beier Off The Bench, Dortmund Grind Out 1-0 Win Over Frankfurt

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Eintracht Frankfurt. One goal. Three points. Job done. That is what matters. Everything else is noise.

Maximilian Beier, introduced as a substitute on 68 minutes, scored the only goal of the game with a right-foot shot in the 80th minute, assisted by Jobe Bellingham. It was the kind of finish that wins matches and the kind of substitution that proves a manager knows his squad. Dortmund needed someone to make something happen. Beier did exactly that. Basics.

The Performance: Dortmund Dominant, Frankfurt Nowhere Near It

The thing is, this was not a complicated match to read. Dortmund controlled it. Frankfurt did not compete with anything like the attitude you need to take points away from home. The numbers tell you that plainly and so do your eyes.

Dortmund had 58 per cent possession and completed 385 passes to Frankfurt's 270. They attempted 32 crosses to Frankfurt's eight. They won 13 corners. Frankfurt won one. The thing is, when you look at those corner counts side by side, you start to understand the territory Dortmund were playing in for large portions of this match.

Dortmund registered 18 shots in total. Frankfurt managed eight. In terms of dangerous attacks, Dortmund produced 74 to Frankfurt's 30. Listen, those are not close numbers. That is one team pressing and probing and another team barely in the game.

Frankfurt did make four saves and their goalkeeper was busy enough. But Dortmund also hit the woodwork once and missed two big chances. Had they been more clinical, this would have been settled long before Beier's late intervention. Unacceptable wastefulness in the first three quarters of the match almost made it a nervy finish.

Frankfurt's Discipline: A Problem They Created Themselves

Frankfurt's evening got harder in the second half when their own players started giving the referee decisions to make. Nnamdi Collins picked up a yellow card for a foul on 58 minutes. Five minutes later, Farès Chaïbi followed him into the book. Two yellow cards in five minutes. That is not bad luck. That is a lack of discipline and accountability.

Frankfurt committed 12 fouls in total to Dortmund's seven. They were stretched and they were flustered and they started making reckless challenges. When you are already struggling to compete, you cannot afford to hand the opposition free kicks and shift the momentum further against you. Frankfurt did both.

Chaïbi was eventually withdrawn on 84 minutes, which tells you everything about how the yellow card affected his manager's thinking. Mario Götze came on for Frankfurt late on as well. Good player. Arrived too late to change anything. That is what happens when a team spends too long chasing a match they should have been in from the start.

The Substitutions That Won It

Credit where it is due. Dortmund's triple substitution on 68 minutes changed the match. Beier, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Ethan Chidiebere Nwaneri all came on together. That is decisive management. That is someone on the touchline who recognised that the game needed a different energy and acted on it immediately rather than waiting.

Eleven minutes after coming on, Beier scored. Bellingham, who had himself only just been introduced on 79 minutes, provided the assist. Two substitutes combining to win the match. That is squad depth being used properly. That is accountability from the players who stepped off the bench and delivered when asked.

Dortmund also rang the changes at the back late on, bringing on Joane Gadou at 90 plus two to replace Julian Ryerson. The clean sheet was protected. That matters.

Frankfurt's Recent Form Says Everything

Listen, nobody should be shocked by Frankfurt's performance here. In their five most recent Bundesliga matches before this one, Frankfurt won two, drew one, and lost two. They conceded 13 goals across those five games. Thirteen. Frankfurt lost to RB Leipzig by a scoreline of 0-6 in one of those five matches. They also lost to FC Augsburg 1-4. A team conceding at that rate away from home was always going to struggle at Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund, by contrast, had gone three wins and two draws across their five most recent Bundesliga matches before this one, keeping a clean sheet in three of them. The conditions for a home win were there. Dortmund delivered it, even if they made it harder than it needed to be.

The Clean Sheet: What It Means

The thing is, keeping Frankfurt to zero on the night is the bit that needs acknowledging. Frankfurt had eight shots and three on target. Dortmund's goalkeeper made three saves. The back line held firm even when Frankfurt brought on fresh legs late on, including Ansgar Knauff and Can Uzun from the bench on 77 minutes, and then Love Arrhov on 84.

None of it was enough. Dortmund's defence held its shape and its standards. When you consider the volume of absentees Dortmund were managing, with multiple players out through injury and one player suspended, keeping a clean sheet in a Bundesliga home fixture represents genuine character.

The Verdict

Dortmund win. One goal. Clean sheet. Three points in the Bundesliga. The manner was not always convincing and the missed chances will bother anyone who holds the squad to proper standards. But the result is right and the substitutions were decisive.

Frankfurt need a serious conversation about their defensive attitude. Thirteen goals conceded in five Bundesliga matches before this one, and nothing here to suggest that problem is being addressed. That is not a run of bad luck. That is a fundamental issue with desire and organisation at the back. It has to be fixed. End of.
