Last updated: 31 July 2026. Seven days out from kick-off and we're back with a proper look at this one.
Right. FA Cup. First weekend of August. Non-league football doing what non-league football does best... threatening to be absolutely brilliant and completely chaotic all at the same time. Consett AFC host North Shields on Saturday 8 August, 3pm kick-off, and honestly? I am here for it.
Look, I know what some of you are thinking. "Jay, it's the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, why are you acting like it's a final?" Because mate, this is where the magic starts. Always has been. Every giant-killing you've ever watched began exactly here, at grounds like this, on afternoons like this. Don't sleep on it.
So here's the thing about Consett AFC coming into this. The data we have on them shows one game played this season, one win, three goals scored, zero conceded. Clean sheet, goals galore. Now look, it's one game. I'm not going to sit here and tell you we're working with a mountain of evidence. But the vibes? The vibes are good.
That win came away from home as well, which is worth noting. Three goals on the road, nothing let in. Whatever they did in that game, it clearly worked. The early-season confidence in a camp matters more than people give it credit for. Especially in a one-off cup tie. You want to be going into these feeling like you can score goals, and right now Consett have got exactly that feeling.
Momentum slope is flat according to the numbers, which just means we haven't got enough games to measure it properly yet. Fair enough. One game in, that's the season. But a winning start is a winning start. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Here's where I have to be straight with you. We've got nothing on North Shields. No form data, no recent results, no injury news coming through. Zero. Blank sheet. That's not me being lazy, that's just where we are seven days out from the game.
And honestly? That cuts both ways. It means I can't tell you North Shields are flying and full of confidence. But it also means I can't tell you they're struggling. It's one of those ones where the tie itself is going to tell us more than any preview can.
What I will say is this. Look at the fixtures. FA Cup ties at this level between two local sides always carry an edge that you can't measure in a spreadsheet. North Shields will not be coming here to make up the numbers. North East football has too much pride for that.
Right, the predictions are in. And this is where it gets interesting.
The model gives Consett a 49.5% chance of winning this. Which basically means... nobody has a clue. Forty-nine and a half percent. That is as close to a coin flip as football gets, mate. Confidence rating of 49 out of 100. The model is essentially shrugging its shoulders and saying "good luck with this one."
I actually looked at the numbers for once and I still came away more confused than when I started. Which is probably the most honest thing the model has ever done. Fair play.
Now. The model also reckons both teams are likely to score. Fifty-five percent chance of BTTS. And it thinks there's a 60% probability of over 2.5 goals in this game. That's the bit that catches my eye. Because Consett's one game this season already went over 2.5, they kept a clean sheet, meaning they banged in three themselves. If the goals are flowing in this one, it could go either way.
We don't have odds available yet as of this update, so I can't give you specific prices. Check back closer to the weekend and I'll have the full breakdown for you.
No injury news in the system for either side right now. Clean slate on that front. I'll be watching for any updates through the week and we'll flag anything significant if it drops. At this level and this early in the season, squads tend to be fit and raring to go. But keep an eye out.
Look. I'm going to be honest with you about this preview. There isn't a screaming value bet jumping off the page here. A 49.5% win probability for the home side is not exactly me jumping out of my chair. It's basically the model saying both teams have a genuine shot.
But here's where I land on it. Consett are at home. They've already scored three goals this season and kept a clean sheet doing it. They've got that early confidence. North Shields are the unknown quantity. In a coin flip like this, I'll take the home side with the early momentum.
I'm going big on this... well, "big" is relative. The model likes goals in this game and I'm inclined to agree. Over 2.5 goals at 60% probability is the most interesting signal in the data. If Consett come out and express themselves like they did in their first game, this could be a lively afternoon.
The BTTS market at 55% is tempting as well, don't @ me. North Shields are going to have a go. They always do at this level.
My lean for the acca... Consett to win and over 2.5 goals. It's not the most adventurous selection in the history of the Saturday Special but given what we've got to work with here, it feels like the sensible read. You heard it here first.
Back to the drawing board if it goes wrong. As always.
Consett AFC vs North Shields. FA Cup. Saturday 8 August. A genuine 50-50 if the model is to be believed, goals expected, home advantage slightly tips it for Consett. This is exactly the kind of game that's brilliant to watch and terrible to predict. Which means it's perfect FA Cup fare, really.
Get yourself across to wherever you can watch this. Non-league football on a sunny August afternoon... there are worse ways to spend a Saturday, mate. Trust the process.
Correct means the selection settled as won on the 90-minute result. Every selection counted here was recorded before kickoff. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
