Right. Let's be honest with each other. This is not a match that is going to have anyone clearing their Saturday afternoon diary in excitement. Start versus Fredrikstad in the Norwegian Eliteserien is not exactly the glamour fixture of the weekend. But you know what? Sometimes the games at the wrong end of the table are the ones that actually matter. And this one matters a lot.
Start are sitting 16th. Dead last. Ten points from 15 games, a goal difference of minus 18, and a fanbase that has been through the wringer this season. They have conceded 34 goals in 15 league games, mate. That is over two a game. You do not need to be some fancy analyst waving around xG numbers, which by the way is just a posh way of saying "shots that looked decent," to know that a defence leaking at that rate is in serious trouble.
Fredrikstad are not exactly flying either. They come into this as the away side sitting 12th, with 14 points from 14 games. Four wins, two draws, eight defeats. Goal difference of minus 12. Look at the fixtures and what you see is two teams who have spent most of this season finding creative new ways to lose football matches.
So yes. This is your actual relegation scrap. No dressing it up.
Here is where it gets interesting for the home side. Start away from home over their last five? Won one, lost four. Conceded 16 goals in those five games. Sixteen. That is not a typo. Their away form string reads WLLLL and honestly the W at the front feels like a cruel joke.
But at home? It is a different story. Not a good story, mind you, but a different one. Their last five home games read LWLDD. A win, three defeats across the last ten at home only accounting for one loss in the last three... they are actually drawing games at their own ground. Over the last ten home matches they have kept a clean sheet in about 17% of games. Not great. But better than zero, which is what they manage away.
The momentum slope for Start at home is flat at zero. Which sounds boring but actually means... they are not getting worse? Trust the process, Start fans. Trust the process.
They do have two long-term injury absentees confirmed in the squad, both out with no return date. That is not ideal when you are already struggling, and it would be no surprise if those missing bodies are contributing to the defensive fragility we have seen all season.
Right, this is the key bit. Fredrikstad at home over the last ten? Three wins, one draw, two losses. Solid enough. Goals flowing, BTTS in over 83% of those home matches. They look like a reasonable football team when they are playing in front of their own fans.
Away from home though? Oh dear. Last five away games: won zero, drawn one, lost four. They have conceded 11 goals in those five away matches and kept zero clean sheets. Their momentum slope away from home is flat. No improvement coming. Their overall last five reads LLLWD, with a momentum slope of minus 0.5. That is a team trending downward.
Look at the fixtures from Fredrikstad's perspective and what you see is a side that simply does not travel well. Coming to Kristiansand, against a home side who at least have a bit more solidity on their own patch, this feels like it could go against the visitors.
There is only one previous meeting between these two sides in the data, and it ended 2-1 to Fredrikstad back in May. Both teams scored. Three goals in total. That one game gives us a 100% BTTS rate and a 100% over 2.5 goals rate, which is a small sample size but absolutely fits with everything else we know about these two sides. Neither of them can keep the ball out of their net consistently.
Honestly, if you are watching this game and thinking about where the entertainment comes from, it is goals. Both teams scoring is the vibe here and the numbers back it up thoroughly.
Start's overall last five has BTTS in 60% of games and over 2.5 goals in 80%. Their away form has BTTS in 80% and over 2.5 in every single game. Fredrikstad's overall last five has those numbers lower, around 40%, but their away form and the head to head both point towards goals at both ends.
Neither side has kept a single clean sheet in their recent away form. Start have not kept one away from home in any of their last five on the road. Fredrikstad have not kept one either. A cagey nil-nil? Not a chance. Absolutely not a chance.
The model has Start at about 47.5% to win this one, which feels about right to me. Home advantage matters here. Start are genuinely better on their own ground. Fredrikstad are genuinely poor away from home. I reckon Start nick this, probably in a game with three or four goals.
I'm going big on this. Give me Start to win and both teams to score. It fits the home form, it fits Fredrikstad's inability to keep a clean sheet on their travels, and it fits the only head to head meeting we have. Will Start actually manage to see it out? Look, they concede for fun so there is always doubt. But they need these three points desperately with that goal difference and Fredrikstad are made to be beaten away from home right now.
You heard it here first. Start to end a poor run of form with a scrappy, chaotic, very Norwegian football victory. Don't @ me if it ends 4-3 to Fredrikstad. Back to the drawing board if it does.
