Right. The FA Cup. The greatest cup competition in the world. And it starts, as it always does, at the bottom. In the mud. Under floodlights. With two sets of fans who absolutely cannot stand the thought of losing to each other. Friday 7 August, 6:45pm, Dudley Town vs Droitwich Spa. Get in.
Look, I know some people turn their nose up at this stage of the FA Cup. I am not those people. This is where the whole thing begins. This is where someone's Sunday league centre-back becomes a local legend. This is where the vibes are purest. No agents, no press conferences, no VAR. Just football.
Dudley Town at home. Droitwich Spa making the trip. A Friday night kick-off under the lights. Honestly, if you are within driving distance of this one and you are not going... what are you doing with your life?
Now I know what you are thinking. Jay, you hate numbers. And look, fair. But I actually dug into this one and the data is genuinely interesting. Bear with me.
The model gives Droitwich Spa a 41.7% chance of winning this. Dudley Town are at home so they will fancy themselves, but this is not a walkover by any stretch. Forty-two percent confidence in the away side tells you everything you need to know. This is a coin flip with a slight lean. Anyone telling you they know exactly what happens here is lying to you.
But here is the bit that really caught my eye. Both teams to score... 67% probability. Over 2.5 goals... 71%. And over 3.5 goals is sitting at 50%. Fifty percent! That is basically a flip of a coin on whether we get four goals or more in an FA Cup first round qualifier between two non-league sides on a Friday night in August. Scenes.
Now I never use that xG stuff without saying it out loud, so let me be clear, these are model probabilities, not xG, and I am not entirely sure what the difference is but Marcus would know and he would probably explain it for twenty minutes if I asked. The point is, the data is pointing at goals. Lots of them. And I am here for every single one.
Look at the fixtures and what do you see? A season that has barely started. Both sides are coming into this with the paint still wet on the new campaign. No form data to speak of. No head-to-head history in the system. No injury news. This is two squads raring to go, early August energy, legs fresh, and absolutely everything to play for.
That is actually important context. Early season FA Cup ties at this level can go either way precisely because nobody has found their rhythm yet. The team that hits the ground running, the team that has done the pre-season right and has their combinations clicking, they get the edge. We just do not know which one that is yet. And that is kind of brilliant.
Dudley Town will back themselves here. Home ground. Home crowd. Home comforts. At this level, that stuff genuinely matters. The pitch, the changing rooms, not having to get on a bus and travel. Little things add up.
The model only gives Droitwich a 41.7% shot at the win, which means by implication Dudley Town are the slight favourites. In cup football at this stage, being at home and being the favourite is a decent place to start. They will want to set the tempo early, make it physical if needed, and use the crowd to their advantage. The fans in the stands are not just spectators here, they are part of the game plan.
Here is the thing about being the away side in a tie like this. There is freedom in it. Nobody truly expects you to go to Dudley Town and win. So what happens if you go there, keep it tight, nick a goal on the counter... suddenly you are the story. Suddenly you are the headline.
A 42% win probability is not nothing. That is nearly a coin flip. Droitwich Spa will know that. Their manager will have told them that. And in non-league football, a motivated underdog travelling with that kind of confidence is a dangerous thing.
If the goals really do fly in like the model suggests, Droitwich will need to make sure they are scoring their share. Getting into a high-scoring game and coming out on the wrong end of it is no fun. But getting into a high-scoring game, trading blows, and nicking it at the end? That is the FA Cup dream right there.
Right. Here we go. I am going big on this... BTTS and over 2.5 goals. The model is screaming goals and I am not going to fight it. Both these sides look like they will contribute to the scoreline based on everything pointing our way. You heard it here first.
As for the result? Genuinely, this is a tough one. The home advantage nudges me towards Dudley Town but I would not be shocked by anything here. A draw and extra time? Absolutely possible. A Droitwich Spa away win? Well within range. A Dudley Town comfortable home win? Also on the table.
If I am forced to pick... Dudley Town to edge it in a game with at least three goals. But I am not exactly confident. This is non-league cup football on a Friday night in August. Confidence is for mugs. Don't @ me.
Whatever happens, get yourself along if you can. Or find a stream. Or follow along on here. Because this is where football lives. Right at the bottom, right at the start, right where it matters most. Back to the drawing board if I get it wrong. But right now... I reckon this one is going to be brilliant.
