Right. The FA Cup. August. Non-league football. Muddy boots, nervous managers, fans who have been waiting all summer for this. If you are not excited about this then I genuinely do not know what to tell you, mate.
Dereham Town versus Walsham Le Willows. Saturday the 8th of August, 2026. Two o'clock kickoff. This is where the magic begins, and I mean that without a single hint of irony.
Look, I will be straight with you. The data on this one is lean. No form guide to pick apart, no head-to-head history to obsess over, no injury list to wade through. We are going in a little bit blind here, which if anything makes it more exciting. This is proper old school cup football. You show up, you find out.
What we do have is a model probability that gives Dereham Town a 59.9% chance of winning this. So roughly a 60-40 split in favour of the home side. That is not a massive gulf. Walsham Le Willows are absolutely in this. Anyone telling you this is a foregone conclusion has not watched enough non-league football.
Home advantage matters at this level probably more than any other. The pitch, the crowd, the familiarity of the dressing room, knowing where the kettle is. It all adds up. Dereham will be backed by their own fans and that counts for something real.
Okay so I actually looked at the numbers for once and there are a couple of things worth talking about here.
The model reckons there is a 59% chance that both teams score in this one. Nearly a coin flip on BTTS. And over 2.5 goals is showing at a 67% probability. So if you are building any kind of acca around this game, the model is pointing pretty clearly towards goals. Both teams having a go, neither side sitting back and parking the bus.
Now I know what some of you are thinking. You are thinking, Jay, what does a model actually know about a pre-season FA Cup preliminary round tie between two non-league sides? And honestly? Fair point. This is not exactly the data set that xG... you know what, I am not even going to go there with xG today. I reckon even the people who love xG would admit it needs a bit more to work with than this.
But here is the thing. A 67% probability on over 2.5 goals tells you something about how these two teams are expected to set up. Open. Attacking. Both willing to have a crack. And at this level that tracks. Non-league FA Cup ties are rarely cagey affairs. Managers want their players to express themselves, crowds get into it early, and before you know it there are four goals and a red card and everyone is buzzing.
Home. That is the big one. Playing at your own ground in the FA Cup first thing in August is a privilege. The pitch will suit them. The fans will be up for it. There is something about the start of an FA Cup run that gets a non-league ground absolutely bouncing, and Dereham will want to feed off that energy.
The model has them as favourites, 60-40. Not dominant favourites, but favourites. If you are Dereham going into this, you will take that all day. You are expected to win but there is enough uncertainty to keep you honest and keep the opposition motivated. That is a decent position to be in.
Because it is the FA Cup, mate. That is it. That is the whole reason. The cup does not care about probabilities. It does not care that you are the away side. Every single year, teams at this level go to grounds where they are not supposed to win and they absolutely do it anyway.
Walsham Le Willows will come here believing. The players who pull on that shirt on Saturday will tell their kids about it. That is not nothing. That is the fuel that upsets are made of. Look at the fixtures across the whole preliminary round any given year and you will see plenty of away wins. This could absolutely be one of them.
There is a reason the FA Cup still matters. Not just for the big clubs dreaming of Wembley. It matters most at this level. It matters for the clubs, the communities, the volunteers who paint the lines and run the tea hut. A win here for either side sets the whole town talking. That is scenes.
For Dereham Town, a home win gets the season off to the perfect start and sends them into the next round with confidence and a bit of cash in the kitty. For Walsham Le Willows, pulling off the away win would be the kind of result that lives long in the memory of everyone who was there.
Either way, 2pm on Saturday, these players will give everything. They always do.
The model says Dereham Town at home, goals in the game, and both teams on the scoresheet. I am not going to argue with that as a general read of the situation. Home advantage is real, the probability split is sensible, and 67% on over 2.5 goals feels right for a cup tie at this level where nobody is playing for a draw.
If you are putting this in an acca, BTTS looks the play based on what the numbers are suggesting. You heard it here first.
But forget the betting for a second. Just watch the game. Non-league FA Cup football in August is a genuine treat. Get on the highlights if you cannot make it there. This is the good stuff. This is the whole point.
Back to the drawing board on last week's acca by the way. Don't @ me.
