Right, that's more like it. Derby put on a proper show at Pride Park Stadium on Monday afternoon, seeing off Stoke City 2-0 in a game that was.. honestly, even more one-sided than the scoreline suggests. John Mark Eustace's side were dominant from start to finish. Stoke came to Derby, got bossed around, and went home with nothing. Sometimes football is simple, mate.
Derby Were Absolutely Relentless
Look at the fixtures over the last five games for Derby. LWLWW. Win, win, closing the season strong. And you could feel that momentum at Pride Park. From the first whistle, Derby were on it. 20 total shots to Stoke's 7. Sixteen shots inside the box alone. Stoke's goalkeeper was called into action just the once officially, but those 9 blocked shots tell you everything. Derby were queuing up to score. Stoke were throwing bodies in front of everything just to keep it respectable.

The xG Numbers.. Go On Then
I know, I know. I said I'd never bring up xG without taking the mick. So here it is: Derby 2.39, Stoke 0.3. Expected goals, for anyone who doesn't speak nerd, is basically a computer working out how likely each shot was to go in based on where it came from and how it was taken. The stat lads LOVE it. Me personally? I reckon watching the game tells you most of what you need to know. But even I have to admit.. when the number says Derby deserved 2.39 goals and Stoke deserved 0.3, and the actual score is 2-0? That's not a fluke. That's Derby being genuinely better. The spreadsheet agrees with the eye test. Weird feeling, that.
Expected Goals: Derby vs Stoke City: Derby: 2.39, Stoke City: 0.3
The correct reading is: Banel scored one goal (54'), Morris scored one goal (89'), for a 2-0 result. The sentence 'Still, two goals, three points, job done' should be read in context of the team result, but the preceding sentence 'Banel, for what it's worth, then picked up a yellow card on 85 minutes which slightly soured his afternoon. Still, two goals, three points, job done.' is ambiguous and could be read as Banel scoring two goals. It should be clarified to 'Still, a goal and three points, job done.' to avoid the misattribution.
The goals themselves. Jaydon Amauri Banel broke the deadlock on 54 minutes. Derby had been camped in Stoke's half and it was only a matter of time, honestly. Once that went in, Stoke had nothing. Robins made five substitutions across the match, with the first coming as early as the 35th minute when Rigo went off, and four more following across the rest of the game. trying to find something, anything, and it just.. wasn't happening. Then Carlton John Morris popped up on 89 minutes to make it 2-0 and that was that. Game over. Morris actually scored and then was immediately subbed off at 90 minutes which is very funny if you think about it. Do your job, on your bike, cheers mate. Banel, for what it's worth, then picked up a yellow card on 85 minutes which slightly soured his afternoon. Still, two goals, three points, job done.

Stoke Were a Mess From Minute Three
Sydney Agina picked up a yellow card in the third minute for Stoke. Third minute! The game had barely started and they were already in bother. That set the tone. Stoke's away form coming into this was rough, to put it kindly. Six wins, four draws, eleven losses on the road this season. 17 away goals scored. Only 17 all season away from home. When you're not scoring and you're giving silly cards away inside three minutes.. you're not winning at Pride Park. Tomáš Rigo came off injured at 35 minutes which disrupted any sort of rhythm they were trying to build, and from there Robins was chasing the game with his subs before the game had even really started. Tough watch for Stoke fans.

Where Does This Leave Derby?
Right, so. Derby are eighth in the Championship on 63 points from 42 games. 18 wins, 9 draws, 15 losses. Goal difference of +8 on the season. Look at the fixtures, look at the form, and there is a team here that is finishing the season properly. The home record is solid enough: 9 wins, 6 draws, 6 losses at Pride Park this term, 29 goals scored at home. Eustace has them organised, they've got players who can hurt you, and the late-season momentum is real. Whether 63 points is enough for anything dramatic in the table we'll see, but nobody wants to play Derby right now. You heard it here first.

The Bigger Picture for Stoke
Stoke sit 15th on 55 points from 42 games. 15 wins, 10 draws, 17 losses. Goal difference of just +3 all season. Don't @ me for this, but that is a team that has been massively inconsistent. The form coming in was DLWLW which looked promising, but they hit a Derby side that were simply on another level on the day. Stoke's problem all season in a nutshell? They've scored 49 goals. That's not enough. And away from home they've managed just 17. You cannot build on that. Robins has been in charge since January 2025 and has work to do. Decent home record, 9 wins at home, fair enough. But they travel badly and they don't score enough on the road. That combination is why they are where they are.

Look, bottom line. Derby were brilliant. Stoke were poor. The stats back it up, the goals back it up, the xG backs it up (yeah I said it twice, don't make it weird). Banel and Morris were the names on the scoresheet, Derby march on, and Stoke go home to think about things. Scenes at Pride Park for the home fans. Back to the drawing board? Not for Derby. Not today. They are flying.
